• Award Snub: The film picked up numerous critics’ prizes and led the pack in Independent Spirit Award nominations in 2021, but was ultimately shut out of the Oscars and did not win any Indie Spirit awards. This could be attributed to the film’s subject matter being a controversial topic, as well as the film having a more subtle, quieter tone instead of the grand gestures usually rewarded by the Oscars. In a leaked email, a member of the Academy who identifies as a conservative with strong pro-life views said he would not be watching the film as it is against his religious beliefs. The film did manage to win awards for Best Actress and Best Screenplay from the New York Film Critics’ Circle.
