  • Cliché Storm: A guy is humiliated by a jerk, then trains himself hard by a wise mentor who acts as a surrogate father, beats the crap out of the jerk and finally gets his girl. Point for point, this film served as a pretty spot-on remake of The Karate Kid (1984) several years before the official remake came out, only replacing karate with MMA, similarly to how the official remake replaced karate with kung fu.
  • Narm: "Control the outcome." A deep quote which in that particular context only translates as "win."
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • Yes, that's Amber Heard playing the role of Baja, Jake's love interest.
    • Also, Evan Peters plays Max Cooperman.
  • Signature Scene: The scene of the Capoeira fighter doing a crazy exhibition only to be knocked out with a single punch is oddly popular.
    • A portion of the popularity comes from an alternate angle from the scene being uploaded to Youtube without the film's context, leading many to think it was out of a real fight or martial arts tournament.
  • So Bad, It's Good: For the people who cannot ignore the cliche.
