YMMV / Ned's Newt

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: While this show was hugely popular in Canada and was one of Teletoon's first flagship series, it wasn't so much in the US. It only lasted a few months on Fox Kids and then faded into obscurity in the US until Qubo aired it in 2016.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The "Freaky Friday" Flip problem in "Newt's Ned" is ultimately solved by all parties involved rubbing their feet on a carpet, generating enough static electricity to switch them all back to normal... much like what also would happen years later in an episode of Gravity Fallsnote .
  • My Real Daddy: Series creators Andy Knight and Mike Burgess had rather minimal involvement in the series; most of the show's development and production was headed by Andrew Nicholls and Darrell Vickers, whose experience as the head writers for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson gave the show its flair.
  • Older Than They Think: The premise of this cartoon was also used in the 1966 Japanese series Kaiju Booska.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: There are some people who accuse Newton of being a ripoff of Genie from Aladdin, with both characters being giant blue shapeshifters with a penchant for zany humor and pop culture references.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: Many of the cultural references, especially those by Newton, are usually of movies or TV shows from the 90s that modern viewers probably wouldn't get. Case in point, he makes a Take That! against Cutthroat Island (AKA the film that killed the pirate genre until 2003) at one point.
  • Values Dissonance: In "Home Alone With Newt" Ned is, as the title implies, left home alone for the evening (with his uncle to occasionally check in on him). While this was still common in the 90s, in this day and age if Ned's parents decided to leave their 9-year-old child home alone at night, they would very likely be receiving a visit from Social Services for child endangerment.
  • The Woobie: Ned is constantly tormented by his cousin, his Rich Bitch classmate, and is normally unable to speak coherently in front of his crush. The world is often just against him.
