• Creepy Cute: Holly. How can you not love adorable, big-eyed Holly? Oh yeah, right... his hobbies include slaughtering pet dogs, catching rattlesnakes, eating old tea leaves and conjuring dead things.
• Squick: The book deals with the subject matter of sexual abuse and rape, and features multiple references to this. The one upside is when Holly reveals to Casey that he's known all along that she's a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather, but Holly proclaims he loves her, anyway.
• What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: The author was 21 years old when she published the book, and the 2 main characters are 15 years old. Author insisted though that it's not for kids and instead a book about human rights abuses and freedom, written for adult readers.
• Writer Cop Out: The book ends with Casey and Holly moving to an island called Seabiscuit Cove so Holly can claim the abandoned lighthouse there as his territory. Meant to lead into sequel territory, but they leave Scott and Celia behind, and Holly informs Casey that he's going to die soon. Might be averted in a future sequel, not clear yet.
