YMMV / Nancy Drew Game 3 Message In A Haunted Mansion

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Nancy completely blows off the threatening note she gets, making zero comments about it to anyone around the house and not even doing so much as telling her friends over the phone about it (which is usually where she discloses things that are too risky to explain to the locals).
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The Phoenix flicking its head in the parlor is never explained and has no rational justification behind it, unlike most of the other hauntings. Nancy also doesn't make any comments on it. The chair being "sat" on may also count, though a little less since it fits closer with the theme of the house being haunted.
  • Game-Breaking Bug: If you zoom in on the fire when it occurs, you can't back away from the box, preventing you from being able to grab the fire extinguisher to stop it, giving you an Unintentionally Unwinnable game over.
  • Narm: "Fire." Geez, for someone watching a life investment on the verge of collapse, Nancy sure doesn't seem very put off by it. It doesn't help either that if you let the fire spread too far, you zoom back out...and the room barely even looks like it's been touched.
  • Nightmare Fuel: In a strange piece of irony, the game's plot is Lighter and Softer than the first two games as the stakes are much lower with no murder mystery or death threats involved. In terms of scare factor though, this game easily bests its predecessors — Abby's hauntings no doubt caused many a sleepless night. Even once you know they're faked, it's the surprise factor and the feeling of Being Watched that still makes them unnerving beyond all recognition. And while no death threats are involved, the threatening note commanding you to "LEAVE THE MANSION NOW!!" in the absolute angriest script you could think of won't exactly be leaving you feel welcomed.
  • That One Puzzle: The combination lock at the very end of the game, which requires you to run through the Chinese symbols for every single keyword of the poem in Nancy's room in order. What, you weren't expecting to actually need to write down the Chinese symbols? Too bad — guess you gotta go through the whole house and find them all over again.
