YMMV / Mystery Science Theater 3000 S08 E13: Jack Frost

Go To

The MST3K episode contains examples of:

  • Bizarro Episode: Subverted. At the beginning of the episode, Mike convinces Brain Guy to switch places with him and it appears that the latter may join the bots in riffing the movie, like what Pearl would later do in Quest of the Delta Knights. However, Brain Guy quickly comes to his senses and sends Mike back onto the satellite just as the film begins. note
    • Jack Frost is one of the oddest films they've ever riffed, so one could still see this as a Bizarro Episode of sorts.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Mary Jo Pehl considered Mafushka, the wicked stepsister, to be by far her favorite character.
This movie had one of my favorite characters ever, the mean step-sister. The step-sister was, how shall I say, a virile woman with a deep, dubbed voice. She was mean and spiteful and spoiled but I daresay she wasn't irredeemable, nor can she wholly be blamed. She was a product of bad parenting! And she made me laugh, especially when she's getting made-up by her mother; when she's trying to fake her way through dinner; and most especially when she brawls with Jack Frost himself.
  • Funny Moments:
    • The opening host segment:
Crow: Ladies and... Gypsy! Michael Nelson IS... LORD OF THE DANCE!
Gypsy: Oh!... did the other one die?
      Crow: I dunno...
    • Gypsy's reaction to the performance:
(Mike, Crow and Tom pretend to step dance for a bit; Mike strikes a pose)
Gypsy: Oh... Um, yaaay!... Well, there's this sink I need to take a look at, so I'll just...
      (they resume "dancing")
    • When Ivan is turned into a bear:
Servo: It was her bucket full of Rogaine!
      Ivan: Nastenka, what's the matter?
Crow: (as Ivan) Am I unbearable?
Mike: (as Nastka) Every time I meet a man he's either gay or a bear!
    • Tom's "translation" of the song:
It's colder than a bucket of penguin poop,
      It's colder than a polar bear's butt.
The dogs are sticking to the fire hydrants...
      • At the end of the song, Father Frost says, "Bye-bye!" Tom dutifully translates, "That means, 'Bye-bye'!"
    • They get a lot of mileage out of Baba Yaga's chicken leg house. While faithful to the legend, it's still pretty goofy.
      • Baba Yaga herself is this pretty much every second she's onscreen, mostly due to the actor's incredibly hammy performance.
    • Upon seeing a roast pig on the table, Tom cries out, "Babe!"
    • When Mafushka confronts Jack Frost, Mike and the Bots act like a Curb-Stomp Battle is about to start.
Mike: (as Mafushka) "You just got yourself a big sled load of whoopass, Frost."
    • "Invasion of the Matryoshka People!"
    • Mike as Ivan when the later repeatedly says "Look at me!" to Nastenka, "Do I look like Simon LeBon?"
    • Ivan trying out his new bow and the shot cutting to his arrow weakly sticking into a tree and then drooping down a bit:
      Mike: "Wow, it barely works!"
    • One scene opens with a long static shot of an empty field.
Crow: "What, are we looking for frickin' Waldo here?"
