YMMV / Mystery Science Theater 3000 S04 E21: Monster a-Go Go

  • Beam Me Up, Scotty!: Most MSTies use the quote "There was no monster" when referencing this film. But actually, the narrator never says that! His actual phrasing is, "Suddenly there was no trail. There was no giant, no monster, no thing called Douglas to be followed. There was nothing in the tunnel but the puzzled men of courage who suddenly found themselves alone with shadows and darkness!" Writer Paul Chaplin even notes this in the episode guide book. (There is a later line "But is the menace with us? Or is the monster gone?", which may help explain the confusion.)
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: At one extraordinarily low point during the movie, Joel starts drinking a soda in the theater. The bots are angry because 1) drinks apparently aren't allowed in the theater, and 2) he didn't bring any for them. Of course, such a rule has never been stated and the incident is quickly forgotten.
    • Also Fridge Brilliance: There was no soda. The soda was found, unopened and cold in the refrigerator.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Gary Reddenbacher did indeed "disappear into the night" after his grandfather's death.
    • The "Johnny Longtorso" sketch seems oddly prophetic in regards to modern video games and their reliance on DLC that should be included with the video game they're developed for, along with other methods like microtransactions and loot boxes, to boost profits.
    • Similarly, this episode first aired about eight months before the premiere of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, famous for having a number of combining Megazord robot toys sold separately.
    • And now certain action figure lines include segments of larger figures along with the main toy, where you have to collect the entire wave to assemble the larger figure.
  • Older Than They Think: Johnny Longtorso is similar to Transformers Combiners, or Voltron.
