YMMV / Mystery Science Theater 3000 S03 E19: War of the Colossal Beast

Go To

War Of The Colossal Beast:

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In the episode Mike plays Glen reading the usual fan letter, whose writer names Joel as their favorite character. Mike would, of course, find himself the subject of a lot of hatred from those kinds of people a year later.
  • The Other Darrin: The film's recasting of Glenn Manning is lampshaded in a host segment in which Manning (played by Michael J. Nelson) complains that the filmmakers "pulled a Roger Moore" by not casting him in the sequel.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: A lot of fans forget or just struggle to remember what film followed Mr. B Natural.

Mr. B Natural:

  • Fountain of Memes: Mr. B Natural is probably the most quotable short that the show ever did.
  • Fridge Horror: As pointed out by Tom Servo:
Mr. B Natural: And don't be so sure I wasn't in the garden with Mr. and Mrs. Adam.
Servo: *nervous laugh* Yeah, you were the snake.
  • Ho Yay:
    Joel: Mr. B, you're hot!
    Joel: (dreamily) Oh, Mr. B...
  • One-Scene Wonder: As can be seen from this trope page and elsewhere, the short is far more memorable than the movie being riffed in this episode. So much so that Rifftrax brought it back as a Kickstarter reward, and this time using a complete copy, as the one on the show is quite noticeably missing Buzz actually meeting Mr. B and jumps into the middle of their conversation. The short later gets a second riffing by MST3K, third in total, in the Gizmoplex as part of their Festival of Shorts, this time with the Mads Kinga Forrester and Max as the riffers being made to watch during their imprisonment in the Moon 13 movie vault after Season 12.
  • Values Dissonance: Tom derisively calling Mr. B a "sexless man/woman" is pretty cringe-inducing after increased awareness of non-binary genders.
    • Though in an interview, Mary Jo Pehl does praise the short for pushing gender boundaries long before it was really acceptable.
