YMMV / My Year of Rest and Relaxation

  • Broken Base: The ending is extremely divisive. Does it summarize the whole point of the book as a slow creep towards the devastation of 9/11, and the otherwise fairly carefree (if jaded) culture of The '90s? Or is it a portentous, over-foreshadowed exploitation of a tragedy? Or somewhere in the middle?
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Some readers find that the book's tone is so relentlessly grim and bleak, and the narrator is so cruel and selfish, along with most of the other characters being incompetent at best and nasty at worst, that it's just hard to care about anything that happens. Especially since the one good person in the story, Reva, dies instead of the loathsome Trevor.
