YMMV / My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic S9 E8 "Frenemies"

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo:
    • The positioning of the log Chrysalis is talking to might bring something else to mind. Doesn't help that the log is pinkish in color.
    • During the Villain Song, Chrysalis seems to checking out Tirek's rear-end quite intensely.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: When Chrysalis rejected the notion of reforming and accepting friendship again, was it nothing more than an Ignored Epiphany, or was it because she felt herself transforming the same way Pharynx did, given that Changelings undergo an actual, physical transformation when they "give love freely, instead of taking it", and Chrysalis's context was similar to Pharynx in realizing that feeling of mutual acceptance?
  • Character Rerailment: Chrysalis has recovered from her Badass Decay. While still clearly suffering from Sanity Slippage and as arrogant as ever, she knows how to handle the dangerous situations she winds up in and put her shapeshifting abilities to good use. Most of all, not only is she the first of the three villains to defy the temptation of friendship, she's the one who comes up with the idea to double-cross Grogar. Once again she's the deceitful, cruel, calculating and powerful villain she was introduced as.
  • Evil Is Cool: Tirek, Chrysalis, and Cozy Glow are already this individually, but it's taken to another level with them together, especially when they sing "Better Way to Be Bad".
  • Misaimed Fandom: Chrysalis, Tirek, and Cozy Glow spend the entirety of the episode learning how to work together as commanded by Grogar, which has led some fans to believe that friendship does work for them and they should have been given the chance to redeem themselves. While it is true that they managed to bond and have fewer problems working with each other, that doesn't really make them look any less evil or has made them have second thoughts about their life of villainy. Plus, even with their newfound respect for each other, they still treat everypony else like dirt, as there was a character in the episode named Rusty Bucket who acted as a lone guard, and Cozy Glow pretended to be friends with him so that she can get past him up the mountain and gets angry at him when he refuses, and she has Chrysalis trigger an avalanche to bury him in the snow. What was shown in this episode is that these three might get along and work together, but that doesn't change the fact that they are villains who are trying to take over Equestria.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Tirek, Chrysalis, and Cozy Glow were meant to subvert any sympathy due to showing that despite learning the power of friendship, they reject said friendship out of spite to the concept, thus establishing them as completely irredeemable. But many were left with the opposite impression due to their Pet the Dog moments to each other, which continued even after supposedly rejecting their friendship, their mistreatment by Grogar and showing more redeemable traits than many of the shows redeemed villains displayed before their Heel Face Turns. This caused many to assume that they could have been redeemed if given time and encouragement causing their being deemed Beyond Redemption by the heroes, who never know of their redeeming moments, to be highly controversial. This especially applied to Cozy Glow as many couldn't buy a child being so irredeemably evil in this setting without mitigating reason.
