YMMV / My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic S6 E18 "Dungeons & Discords"

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo:
    • Across the entire first act, with the constant hinting at Spike and Big Mac always getting up to something whenever the others are away. "I have no idea what you're talking about. And if I did, I certainly wouldn't be allowed to discuss it with you girls."
    • Big Mac's in-game avatar is named "Sir McBiggen".
    • Twilight's awkward "We should just close the door and let them finish... whatever this is" suggests the "guys night" gaming is a strictly homosocial activity.
    • Rainbow Dash gets excited when she sees Big Mac's sword.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The beautiful mare at the nightclub, whose official name is Chiquita Banana. She appears just in one scene, but her unique flapper girl design was sufficient to gain attention. Even Discord and Big Mac found her gaze-worthy.
  • Fanfic Fuel:
    • The old-school night club immediately stands out as one of the most memorable things about the episode, although the details of this place are pretty much nonexistent. Where is it? When is it? Who goes there? Is it a public club that anypony could attend, or is it a secret society home to all kinds of debauchery? Did Discord make it real, or was it already there?
    • What were the two exciting places Discord listed as being fun to go out to at night?
    • Future games of Ogres & Oubliettes and what classes the rest of the Mane Six and maybe Starlight would be.
    • What did the Mane Six do in Yakyakistan? Apparently, the series isn't going to show it.
  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • Spike's and Discord's roles in the Fighter, Mage, Thief dynamic. You'd expect Spike to be the Thief and Discord to be the Mage, right? Well, just think about Personality Powers for a minute: Spike, having grown up with a Magical Girl surrogate big sister (Twilight), likely has a bit of Big Sister Worship when it comes to magical stuff; Discord, meanwhile, clearly has enough of The Trickster traits to make him fit the Thief slot like a glove.
    • In Dungeons & Dragons lore, dragons are strongly associated with arcane magic.
    • It also makes a certain amount of sense that the fantasy RPG in this universe is named after ogres. While dragons are very real in Equestria, humanoid monsters like ogres are likely to be completely imaginary creatures.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • This image, drawn four years before the episode aired.
    • The Josephine Baker mare, with her bananas cutie mark, might remind some viewers of the fan-made Friendship Is Magic Bitch video.
    • Discord's "opposite" dimension sure looks like a certain plumber's Final Smash.
    • The "Ponies Playing Poker" thing has been done. This is just one example.
    • About a year before the episode was released, a My Little Pony-based supplement for Pathfinder was released.
    • Remember back in Season 3 when Discord mocked the idea of being worried about Fluttershy's "disapproving eyeballs"? Well, now all it takes is an eyebrow lifted in clear disapproval in order to get him to modify his behavior.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • The episode from the previews seen in the commercials felt like it was going to be an entire episode of Deep-Immersion Gaming with Discord as the GM to spice things up. Instead, the episode was mainly about Spike and Big Mac getting Discord to accept their idea of fun, and placed the reality-warping elements seen in the commercials to around the final third of the episode.
    • The fact that other male characters such as Cranky Doodle, Pipsqueak, Angel Bunny and Shining Armor weren't part of Guy's Night was also a missed opportunity. note
    • The Mane Six's trip to Yakyakistan sounds pretty intriguing, and could have made for a great pair of Synchronous Episodes.
    • It would have been interesting to see how Starlight would react to Discord changing the world inside the castle she lives in and especially her reaction to Discord in general.
