YMMV / My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic S5 E3 "Castle Sweet Castle"

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: Twilight demonstrates how a lot of people are not used to their new place of residence due to being more emotionally attached to the previous home they had, especially when moving wasn't based on a decision or desire for a new place but necessity.
  • Accidental Innuendo: As Twilight wakes up, she pierces a pancake with her horn and it dangles there covered in whipped cream.
  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: Tiny ornaments that hold memorable scenes seem unlikely today, but small keychains holding a photo slide and loupe used to be common mementos at tourist destinations.
  • Broken Base: The Too Many Cooks Spoil the Soup aspect of the Mane 6 redecorating Twilight's castle. While some fans either liked it or didn't mind it due to the lesson that is being taught, others have criticized it for having the rest of the Mane 6 come off as idiots who have no idea of what Twilight is interested in (despite knowing her for four seasons) and instead decorate the castle based on their own preferences.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Twilight sleeping on her pancakes has garnered the nickname "Twicake Sprinkles".
    • The look Twilight gets at the spa has given rise to the nickname "Punklight Sparkle".
  • Genius Bonus:
    • One of Dash's Daring-Do posters has the subtitle "Riddle of the Sphinx". So what was the riddle of the sphinx? Besides the common one — "What walks on four legs in the morning, two in the afternoon, and three at night?" — there is another, which may be even more ancient. It's about two sisters who constantly create one another: day and night.
    • In the song Fluttershy mentions popinjays, an archaic medieval term for Parrots. Green parrots are flying around her as she sings.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Pinkie Pie was worried if they couldn't meet Twilight's standards, then she'd say something along the lines of "Some friends you are!" In the 2017 movie, Twilight does say something along those lines.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The scene of the pancake breakfast is such if you've watched the Silver Quill analysis of Applejack's character, wherein he states, "By Celestia's horn extender, I will see Applejack eat a strawberry!" Guess what fruit is prominently featured on AJ's pancakes?
  • Ho Yay: Bulk Biceps and Spike, courtesy of the "extra strength, hot stone, deep tissue massage".
Bulk Biceps: YEAAAH!! Let's DO this, little dragon!
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Twilight's Waking Non Sequitur has quickly caught on amongst Bronies.
      Twilight: I'm pancake!
    • The hair style she got at the spa has spawned its own meme, "Punklight Sparkle".
  • One-Scene Wonder: The spa ponies and Bulk Biceps. Aloe talks for the first time (as opposed to Lotus), and then Bulk Biceps bursts in for a quick joke. Yet it's one of the highlights of the episode, especially for fans of Aloe and Lotus Blossom. Unfortunately, the credits only identify her as "Spa Pony".
  • Take That, Scrappy!: Angel Bunny is not very popular with the fans due to his treatment of Fluttershy. We get to see Twilight Sparkle intentionally kick him into a mud puddle. And the fans rejoiced.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Twilight and Spike walk past the ruins of their old home and reminisce. Twilight realizes Spike lost his home too when the library was destroyed and hugs him.
    • The whole episode in general can be this for anyone who has lost a home they've lived in for a long time and had many memorable events in.
