YMMV / My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic S5 E15 "Scare Master"

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Right before the ponies look up and see Fluttershy in her Flutterbat costume, an Evil Laugh that sounds like none of them (even Fluttershy) can be heard. The source of the laughter is never explained.
  • Broken Base: While a number of fans liked the episode for its morals about giving something that you may dislike a try and that it's okay to not enjoy the things that your friends may like, others either complain that the episode is another "Fluttershy is afraid to do something" episode or criticize the way she acts during the first half of the episode (which came off as a Flanderization of her shy personality to some).
  • Fanfic Fuel: The pony world has anime, or some sort of equivalent. This may also mean there's an Equestrian equivalent of Japan.
  • Fanon: The fandom has latched pretty hard onto the thought that Fluttershy is an anime fan (well, manga fan, given the setting's lack of television) since all of the "uninvited guests" are anime characters and some, like Rei and Utena, come from anime not that well known outside of anime fan communities. Not to mention that both Rei and Utena are from series that you would NOT expect Fluttershy to like...
  • Fridge Horror: What could have happened if Fluttershy grabbed the wrong head when she ripped the head off Spike's Siamese twin costume...
    • Considering Spike can handle punishment that would turn the others into paste, he would have probably just been lifted up.
  • Memetic Mutation: This face that Fluttershy makes while screaming at Spike's costume has been exploited by the fan base.
  • The Producer Thinks of Everything: This episode was delayed for a Halloween release, airing after episodes such as "Crusaders of the Lost Mark", which was further down in production order and saved for the show's fifth anniversary. Because the Cutie Mark Crusaders would earn their cutie marks in that episode, the production team wisely thought ahead and gave the Crusaders full-body costumes that hid their flanks, avoiding any continuity errors caused by the Out of Order broadcast.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The background music while the Mane 6 are playing "Pin the Horn on Nightmare Moon" is similar to "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • When the title of the episode was released, it was correctly assumed by many that this would be another Nightmare Night episode. A lot of people were subsequently hoping that Luna would make another appearance as she had in "Luna Eclipsed", and were thus disappointed when she wasn't even mentioned.
    • If there's any time that's a perfect fit for a reality-warping, chaos-loving trickster demon, it's Halloween, yet Discord is curiously absent, even though the plot is about his best friend needing to rustle up something terrifying on the fly. Though given this IS Fluttershy, she probably wouldn't have wanted to involve him in the first place.
    • After the ending of "Bats!", and due to Fluttershy dressing as Flutterbat near the end, a few were also disappointed that Fluttershy didn't turn into her for real.
