- Crosses the Line Twice: When Philomena falls off the fountain, Fluttershy makes a Diving Save to rescue her... only for Philomena to burst into flames and burn to ash on the way down.
- Genius Bonus: Depending on the myth and interpreter, the Phoenix has been said to live off of morning dew, prey, or pure energy; you'd be hard pressed to find an interpretation that suggests a phoenix would even be able to digest a gizzard-full of bird seed, never mind the mouse kibble Philomena was munching before her Vomit Indiscretion Shot. She obviously intended to use the kibble as a prop in her string of pranks on Fluttershy.
- Hilarious in Hindsight:
- After "A Canterlot Wedding," Twilight's desperation during the comic chase to avoid the guards also looking for the bird takes on an amusing weight; she must have known that if they arrested her, her brother, Shining Armor, the Captain of the Guard, would surely hear about it and put him in a really awkward position if he has to oversee processing her in Canterlot, to say nothing of the embarrassment she would have in that situation.
- Twilight shows fear that Fluttershy might be banished and imprisoned in the place she was banished to. We find out later that Celestia and Luna banished King Sombra to the northern ice and imprisoned him in it.
- Doubly so as Twilight ends up doing that very thing to the villain in season four.
- According to Word of God, the episode was "originally conceived as a tug-at-your-heartstrings style episode about losing a pet". 4 seasons later, they finally used this premise for real.
- Narm/Narm Charm: The scene where Fluttershy thinks Philomena is dead, which should be a Tear Jerker, includes a recycled sound clip when Fluttershy inaudibly squeaks "I'm Fluttershy" from episode 1. One side thinks it ruins the moment since it is a fairly obvious Stock Sound Effect, while the other side thinks it works fairly well considering how somewhat inaudible Fluttershy sounds when she says it.
- So Okay, It's Average: Tends to be the general fan reaction. While many agree that there’s nothing truly bad about the episode, it also doesn’t have much going for it to stand out from others of the first season. It’s not helped that it’s sandwiched between two other, more widely talked about episodes, as well as a case of missing out on a good aesop about losing your pet. (Though that aesop was touched upon on a later episode at least.)
- Suspiciously Similar Song: Of "Yakkety Sax" during the Benny Hill-esque chase. Which had been used before in "The Ticket Master".
- It should be noted that the version in this episode is slightly different, with a bit of a rockabilly-esque guitar added in that didn't exist (or possibly was quieter) in the version from The Ticket Master. It also has an added sax section that definitely wasn't in Ticket Master.
