YMMV / My Hero Academia: Two Heroes

Go To

  • And You Thought It Would Fail: A variation, in that nobody expected it to be negatively received or even sell outright bad, but considering it was an anime movie that was not from Dragon Ball, it was expected to sell well, but not very well. Instead it quickly jumped to outselling other movies in the month, and is currently the third most successful movie Funimation has ever dubbed, making it one of the most successful movies in the month of its release. To put it in perspective, it came out the same month as The Predator, which it managed to beat with ease, and quickly made over a million in spite of the limited releases.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Godzillo has been getting a lot of attention despite only being a cameo, mostly for being a very obvious Shout-Out to Godzilla.
  • Fridge Brilliance: When he was first seen, many assumed that David Shield was the Batman to All Might's Superman. But that's Aizawa's position. Upon viewing the movie and seeing David's full character, however- he isn't Batman. He's Lex Luthor. He's an old friend of the setting's Superman Substitute to the point where their relationship is full of Ho Yay, he's an unparalleled genius who thinks he knows better than everyone else, he's the Man Behind the Man for the movie's villains (though for ultimately altruistic reasons), and he knows that society relies on that Superman Substitute too much. The difference is that while Lex decides to destroy Superman out of jealousy, David does everything he can to support All Might so that society won't collapse when he disappears.
  • Ho Yay:
    • Bakugo and Kirishima have a lot of scenes together, even sharing a hotel room with one bed. Kirishima even buys Bakugo a suit and tie for the party with roses on them, and Bakugo wears them, even though he hates ties.
    • There's quite a bit of this between All Might and David Shield; the two of them were shown to be pretty close back when All Might lived in America, even to the point of having nicknames for each other, and that hasn't changed much in the present day. David is also shown to be greatly concerned about All Might's power fading, so much so that the entire conflict of the film is brought about because he wants to restore All Might's Quirk to its former glory.
  • Narm Charm: Midoriya's slow-motion running during the final battle, then sudden mad dash, alongside All Might, for a moment, doing his Plus Ultra speech while standing still as he says it. A bit funny? Yes. Still amazing? Absolutely!
  • Signature Scene: Midoriya and All Might teaming up for the first and only time to defeat Wolfram in the climax with "You Say Run" making its triumphant return.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: A good chunk of the promotional material proclaimed that it would go into All Might's backstory. In the movie proper, it's only briefly touched upon in the opening scene and when he and David reminisce about how they met and became partners.
