YMMV / My Hero Academia: Meta Liberation Army Arc

Go To

  • Epileptic Trees: As soon as Geten was revealed to have ice powers, fans came to believe that they were actually a member of the Todoroki Family, specifically Natsuo. The Natsuo theory was eventually jossed when Chapter 240 came along and Geten was shown with their hood down and they are shown having a feminine appearance. However this has started to add fire to theories that Geten might be related to Rei due to their similar faces and quirks.
  • Fan Nickname: Most fans generally call this arc My Villain Academia, named after chapter 220, rather than its official name.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: In its native country the Meta Liberation Army arc was not held in particularly high regard, with many fans suspecting that the anime drastically shortening the arc was because the executives in charge wanted to get past it as quickly as possible. In the west however this arc was praised for giving new dimensions to the League of Villains, making them both highly charismatic but also pitiable and for having a far darker tone then any arc that came before it, with many fans calling this arc one of, if not the, best arcs in all of MHA.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Quite a lot, but especially Tenko's backstory, mixed with Tear Jerker.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Two instances in the anime:
    • The decision to turn this arc into the final one for the 5th season, in order to end the season on a more climactic note, while turning the lower stakes Endeavor Agency arc, into the middle one. This decision caused quite a lot of confusion for manga readers and caused enough discourse for a major Broken Base to form.
    • The decision to remove several important scenes, (such as seeing the League's destitute state at the arcs beginning, Spinner's backstory, and the chilling introduction or Re-Destro), was heavily criticized by the fandom. The fact that the generally agreed upon weaker Joint Training Battle arc, despite having a similar number of chapters (24 to MVA's 23) seemingly received Adaptation Expansion, and took up almost half the season (with 10 episodes vs MVA's 6 episodes) was likewise criticized especially in the west wherein this arc is a fan-favorite.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Out of all the members of the League of Villains, Mr. Compress got the least amount of focus, remaining the same Enigmatic Minion he was at the beginning of the arc.
