• Alternate Character Interpretation:
  • While the film pulls no punches on Julianne being the Villain Protagonist, the gang of Cracked's After Hours are quick to point out that Michael isn't much better. He's keeping his young fiance from finishing college, spends a lot of time with Julianne alone where it seems like he's flirting, and acts very jealous and possessive of Julianne when he believes George is her boyfriend. Michael also invites his ex to his wedding (a faux pas in itself), and gives her about 24 hours notice to attend.
  • Was Julianne really in love with Michael, as she claimed she was? Or was she just upset at losing her back-up plan to be married to somebody? Note that until Michael told her he was engaged, Julianne was actually fearing that he was going to propose because she didn't really want to marry him but was afraid of breaking his heart.
• Award Snub: He made both the Globes and BAFTA, but many wished Rupert Everett went all the way to an Oscar nomination.
• Esoteric Happy Ending: Julianne, Michael and Kimberly will probably have very strained relations here on out; not only is it likely that the married couple will never truly trust her again (especially in Kim's case), but as displayed in Alternate Character Interpretation, Michael comes off as emotionally abusive towards his wife and she really doesn't seem likely to stand up to him or defend herself.
• Ensemble Dark Horse: Rupert Everett steals the show as George, being a genuinely nice and moral figure and voice of reason and for getting many of the film's best lines.
• Retroactive Recognition: Paul Giamatti plays a hotel worker whom Julianne shares a cigarette with at one point.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Julianne isn't supposed to be sympathetic as the Villain Protagonist, but she gets a My God, What Have I Done? moment by the third act and try to redeem herself. Considering how thorough she is in trying to wreck the wedding, it's really hard to tell between people whether or not the redemption was truly earned. The fact that both victims of her schemes forgive her helps, though.
