YMMV / Mr Selfridge

Go To

  • Berserk Button: Harry Selfridge hates drunken, abusive fathers — his drunken father used to beat him and later abandoned him and his mother.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: If Tumblr is to be believed, many fans stick around for one of two reasons: Josie Mardle as played by Amanda Abbington, or Henri and Agnes's love story.
  • Retroactive Recognition: In Season 2, Daisy Ridley had a small role as Roxy Starlet, one of several Americans shopping at Selfridge's; it aired the year before she got her big break in The Force Awakens.
  • The Scrappy: Fans do not like Mr Thackeray.
  • So Okay, It's Average: It's not awful, but the show isn't very smoothly put together, and the characters are hard to get invested in.
  • The Woobie: Josie Mardle. The man she loved and was having a secret affair with drops her because she is past childbearing age and marries a younger woman, despite the fact that Josie stayed with him for years instead of marrying someone whom she could actually have a family with; then, when she finally finds love again and allows herself to be happy, he is killed in WWI and she's left alone again. Oh, God, poor Josie. Add in the fact that she's exquisitely played by Amanda Abbington, who could out-act much of the rest of the (already very talented) cast with her hands tied behind her back and a blindfold on, and it gets worse. Much, much worse. Josie is a fan favorite for a reason, with many viewers saying they only watch for her.
