YMMV / Mother Mother

  • Diagnosed by the Audience: A common interpretation of The Stand is that the narrator is autistic - they “can’t stand the sight/sound/taste/smell of it all” (sensory issues) and seem to be enthusiastic about the topic of space, a subject that a lot of autistic people tend to be interested in.
  • LGBT Fanbase: Mother Mother has never been lacking in LGBTQ+ fans. Their frequent use of The All-Concealing "I" is an obvious aiding factor in that, rendering it all the easier for listeners of all genders and orientations to relate to their lyrics, but even songs of theirs that do gender their characters tend not to play up any specifically-gendered dynamics, with the exceptions specifically critical of traditional gender expectations. E.x., "Verbatim" is from the point of view of a Camp Straight man who mocks the idea that his conventional femininity has much to do with anything, and the singer of "I Go Hungry" states that "I am a man, so I must be insane" with regards to his self-image issues. Their reoccurring themes of discussing mental illness also tend to resonate with... well, anyone to whom they're relevant, of course, but that very much includes LGBTQ+ people who may deal with such struggles as a result of or exacerbated by marginalization; and you'll find plenty of comments on songs like "Body" by trans people stating that they find it relatable in particular. It was a common joke when the band exploded in popularity in 2020 that listening to Mother Mother makes you non-binary. It doesn't, of course, but that just goes to show how many non-binary people are fans of Mother Mother.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Many of their songs are popular amongst amateur artists, fan-animators, and Multi-Animator Project artists. "Body" is likely the most popular thanks to gorny animation memes.
    • Multiple of their songs, such as "Hayloft", became popular to use in the early 2020s on video-sharing sites such as TikTok, with such videos generally being associated with the grunge aesthetic.
  • Older Than They Think: They started becoming popular internationally in the mid-2010s but the band originated in 2005.
  • Signature Song:
    • Going by YouTube views, "Body" is their most well-known song.
    • "Little Pistol" has also gained a lot of attention.
    • Starting from the early 2020s, "Hayloft" has become one of their most recognized songs, mainly due to its usage in many videos.
