YMMV / Monster Hunter 3 (Tri)

Go To

  • Broken Base: Some aspects of the game divided the Monster Hunter community back in its day. Was the game's release on Nintendo's Wii the right choice or not, considering that the previous games were only available on Sony systems? Is the underwater gameplay a great idea or not (and if the former, was it properly implemented or it could have been better)? Does the addition of the Medium Bowguns and Switch Axes compensate the removal of Dual Blades, Gunlance, Hunting Horn, and Bow? Should there have been more monsters from previous games, or was it the right choice to present a predominantly new bestiary? Many of these topics were addressed in Portable 3rd and 3 Ultimate.
  • Polished Port: The Wii U version of 3 Ultimate upscales the graphics to HD and allows for online multiplayer, which the 3DS version does not have unless using the packet relay tool for the Wii U, making it more suited for players who are unable to regularly meet up with other MH3U players in person.
  • Underused Game Mechanic: The 3DS version of 3 Ultimate finally features online play for a handheld Monster Hunter game...but only if you have a Wii U and the packet relay tool for the game, and even then you can only join existing lobbies, not create one. Without a Wii U, you're stick with local wireless multiplayer just like in past handheld Monster Hunter games.
