YMMV / Momoiro Clover Z

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: The scene in the "Koko Natsu" music video where the girls get shot in the face with coconut water. Yes. Coconut water. Honest.
  • Awesome Music: When their concerts open with "Overture" and the fans begin to chant, it's just awesome.
  • Broken Base: There are fans of Hyadain-era Momoclo, and then there are fans of 5th Dimension-era Momoclo. GOUNN is most likely is trying to get them back to their catchy energetic upbeat roots, though, and their recent albums and singles have finally united the bases. Subverted with their collaboration with KISS, surprisingly (only the KISS fandom had issues with it; Mononofus received it generally well).
  • Creator's Pet: Momoka was most likely one to Hyadain, and Stardust Management in general, if her singing parts in "Kaitou Shojo", "Wani to Shampoo" and "Santa San" are of any indication.
  • Epileptic Trees: The declaration of war on AKB theory among fandom.
  • Fandom Rivalry: With their prominent growth into the Idol industry, the mononofus often engage in rivalries with various bigger Idol fandoms, most notably with AKB48's. While it's all about Cool Versus Awesome, numerous pop divas with guaranteed hit songs battle overly energetic girls with more experimental songs, and when the two held concerts in the same venue almost simultaneously, the whole 48 vs 5 thing did not go unforgotten (even in the media). Sales-wise, though, Momoclo is still behind.
    • Some fans also got mad about the resurfacing of the Korean Girl Group Crayon Pop that predates all of their concepts and gimmicks.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: When you remember that the end of Shirome has Akarin be possessed by the titular spirit in exchange for their wish to perform in Kohaku, the sudden resignation of Akarin one year later becomes creepier.
  • It's Popular, Now It Sucks!: Some fans have begun to feel this way. Even Hyadain himself implied this in a controversial tweet of his (which he later deleted after a couple of minutes).
  • Les Yay: Shiorin with everyone else. She often steals kisses from the other members onscreen. Akarin also jokingly pointed out that she has the tendency becoming les.
  • Memetic Mutation: Kanako's Ebizori jump.
  • Only the Creator Does It Right: Hyadain seemed to have a problem with Stardust, and ceased his involvement with them. As a result, the newest album doesn't sound very Momoclo-ish.
    • Hyadain has seemed to reconcile his conflict with Stardust in recent years, producing for their newer act Tacoyaki Rainbow. Despite this, he has yet to work again with Momoclo.
  • Signature Song: "Kaito Shoujo", "Z Densetsu" "Hashire!", and "Wani to Shampoo".
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The guitar riff 16 seconds into "Rodo Sanka" sounds a little like the Shaft theme.
  • Tear Jerker: Akari's graduation, the Kohaku 2012 performance (which also doubles as a Moment of Awesome), and everytime "Ano Sora" is performed at the end of their live concerts.
    • Momoka's final performance was also one for the group, but even more for the fandom, as unlike most graduations where the news was gradual, giving time for fans to adjust, her announcement to leave Momoclo was immediate, leaving no such preparation, with everyone still very emotional and raw.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: They went mainstream? They abandoned their school uniform and kimono mix? Akari is leaving the group? Shiorin is getting a haircut? Hyadain isn't composing the newest single? 5th Dimension concept isn't color-coded? NooooOOOOOOOO!
    • Interestingly averted with the Diamond Four Era. Although fans were initially worried about the effects of Momoka's departure and the group's future, those fears were squashed with a renewed energy in live performances and a return to Momoclo's experimental roots.
  • They Really Can Act: Considering how often they make weird faces, do strange routines and randomly yell on TV, their TV Drama series, Momo Dra gives off the impression that they possess serious acting talent.
    • "Maku ga Agaru" (Raise the Curtains), Momoclo's 1st feature film together, premiered to mainly positive reviews.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?: Toned down in recent years, but not by much. Compare their costumes for "Otome Sensou" to "The Golden History"
