YMMV / Molly (1999)

  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The idea of "cure" autism would be more interesting if the outcome significantly became Gone Horribly Right or even worsen her condition to make Buck deeply regrets his decision of "curing" his sister, instead of just making the "cured" as an temporary result. This would be some better Aesop about disability acceptance.
  • Values Dissonance:
    • The movie's portrayal of an autistic person (especially the idea of them being "cured", even if only temporarily) was considered cringeworthy even when it was released, let alone by the standards of a modern-day audience.
    • Additionally, Elisabeth Shue's unrealistic portrayal of the autistic and intellectually disabled title character wouldn't work if the movie were made or remade now, given the current-day views of ableist casting and demands for disability inclusion in film.
