• Accidental Aesop: The moral of the story could be interpreted as, "If you're in the army during wartime and you've got a cushy assignment away from the fighting, for God's sake stay there!"
• Adaptation Displacement: The play and film remain well-known; the original novel has faded into obscurity.
• Sequelitis: Ensign Pulver, made with a different cast and wiping away Pulver's ending moment of awesome in the original.
• Values Dissonance: Pulver's attempt to get the "dumb little blonde" head nurse drunk so that she'll sleep with him was viewed as innocent male hijinks back when the story was written. Nowadays, the scenes are saved mainly by the fact that the head nurse knows exactly what he's after and thwarts him effortlessly.
