- Captain Obvious Reveal: Within two days of Courtenay's disappearance, Jessica Ellis is the prime suspect in her kidnapping. It is surprising only to Maggie and Mike that she ends up being the culprit.
- Realism-Induced Horror: A child abduction is certainly this trope, especially considering that the majority of abductions are carried out by disgruntled exes or family members, as in this book.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
- Leigh and Maggie are constantly butting heads over Courtenay’s well being: Leigh being fussy about dirt, candy, bedtimes and generally being overprotective while Maggie is much more flexible and tries to help Courtenay be more independent. It’s safe to assume that Leigh already knows that Mike and Maggie’s birth mother Jessica was abusive and neglectful-resulting in her and Owen’s divorce. After learning this revelation, Maggie never nurses the idea that Leigh thinks she’s just like Jessica in the worst ways possible and she’d treat Courtenay badly. (And she never confronts Leigh about this either.)
- Likewise it’s unknown if Owen knows that Leigh and Maggie have clashing ideas about raising Courtenay. He’s never shown acting as mediator between his older daughter and new wife and it’s not shown whether he’s hesitant to disagree with Leigh or not.
