- Adaptation Displacement: While the Mirthworms specials are already obscure, these specials were based on an extremely obscure comic strip that was only published on Reader's Digest: Junior from the late 1950s/early 1960s.
- Audience-Alienating Premise: It's a cartoon about worms. It doesn't help that A Merry Mirthworm Christmas can get downright depressing despite having two synonyms for "happy" in its title.
- Tear Jerker: Bert running away in A Merry Mirthworm Christmas with all of town fearing that he froze to death in a snowstorm.
- Wangst: Bert, especially when he sings about how badly he screws up Christmas preparations in the first special.
