YMMV / Midnight Madness

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse
    • Harold, his girlfriend Lucille, and their friends Barf and Melio are villainous jerks, but are extremely well-remembered characters due to their amusing bickering and Butt-Monkey status.
    • Berle from the Red Team only has her name mentioned once or twice in the entire movie, but her fiery, Pint-Sized Powerhouse skills and personality win her a lot of fans.
  • I Am Not Shazam: The game being played in the movie is not called "Midnight Madness". The game being played is called "The Great All-Nighter" Explanation . An easy mistake to make as this is the name of the movie and the catchy theme song constantly mentions about a phenomenon called "Midnight Madness".
  • Memetic Mutation: "Fagabeefe!" Explanation
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • Michael J. Fox makes his film debut here as Scott.
    • Blaylak (the green team member who dives into the vat of beer) is played by Dirk Blocker, better known these days as Det. Hitchcock from Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
    • Paul Reubens (aka Pee-wee Herman) appears as the owner of Pinball City.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: Disco-ish opening theme? Girls on roller skates? Antiquated video games at a place called Pinball City? Must be 1980!
  • Vanilla Protagonist: The Yellow Team does have some good emotional depth and nuances (such as Adam forgetting his brother's birthday). Still, they come across as slightly less colorful than the four less-prominent teams (the respect-craving sorority, the hilariously stupid Jerk Jock crew, Harold's Butt-Monkey group, and the nerd team), and some people wish that hadn't been the case. It doesn't help that the Yellow Team is just participating for fun, while several of the other teams have more interesting motives (the Red Team and the White Team want to show up the Green Team to get revenge for years of bullying and humiliation, while the Blue Team is ordered to participate by Harold's demanding father).
