YMMV / Midnight Diner

  • Adaptation Displacement: Those who started watching the series via Tokyo Stories on Netflix probably don't realize they started with the fourth season, skipping over 30 episodes and a feature-length film. At the same time, many also don't realize the show is based on a Manga.
  • Awesome Music
    • Omoihide (Memories) by Suzuki Tsunekichi, the recurring theme song of Midnight Diner.
    • Uso no Tsuki Kata from LOVE LOVE LOVE, the ending song for season two.
    • Dekiru Koto, a recurring insert tune by Kimie Fukuhara starting in season two, a somber, melancholic acoustic song.
    • Omoi Omowa Re, another insert song from Kimie Fukuhara.
  • Continuity Lockout: As a result of Adaptation Displacement, new viewers who began with Tokyo Stories will hardly know who any of the regular patrons are, especially when the prior three seasons and two movies had specific Character Arcs and Character Development; even worse, some customers who were seemingly one-shot characters sporadically reappear in either season of Tokyo Stories. Without context (even though the Master provides a bit of Exposition, but not always), it becomes confusing to determine which character has already been on the show or not.
  • Genius Bonus: In the episode on kitsune-udon during Season 2 of Tokyo Stories, the patrons state the Master's kitsune-udon and aburaage (fried tofu) are so good because he makes offerings at the local shrine outside of his restaurant. Although Netflix subtitles do not say to whom, the Japanese spoken reveals it to be to Inari, the Shinto god who uses foxes as messengers - kitsune's Trademark Favourite Food is aburaage (for example, fried tofu sushi is called Inari sushi).
