• Funny Moments: Overlaps with Moment of Awesome.
  Racist customer: Why don't you go back to your own country?
  Lefty: This is my country.
  Cal, narrating: And to prove it, he did a very American thing: he reached under the counter and produced a pistol.
• Nightmare Fuel: The doctor rushes home and finds his entire family brutally murdered and mutilated.
• Slow-Paced Beginning: The first half of the book that recounts Desdemona, Lefty and their children's lives can feel like this. This is because Cal is not technically not the main character; the gene that affects his life is.
• Squick: A lot, especially the incest.
• The Woobie: Desdemona. Her parents are killed, her village is burned, she narrowly survives the great fire of Smyrna, and she spends most of her adult life in a country where she feels horribly out of place, wracked with guilt over her marriage. It's no surprise that after Lefty's death, she becomes so crippled by despair that she spends the rest of her life in bed.
