YMMV / Michael McIntyre

  • Critical Dissonance: As noted above, he is well liked by the public but hated by critics.
  • Funny Moments: So many.
McIntyre: Before I start, I want you to know that I love being here, I love living here. I love British people - I am a British person and I would live nowhere else. I live amongst you, I love you, I'm looking at [the audience's] little British faces, and I want you to know that I love you. But when I'm on holiday... I really hate you. [...] British people on holiday - we're so whiny, aren't we?! [adopts a spectacularly nasal whine] 'Dave, Dave, have you seen my other flip-flop Dave?' [...] British people, we sunbathe like we've been shot! [He lies face down on the stage with arms and legs outstretched, then lifts his head and adopts the whiny voice again] 'Barry, what time is it back home? D'you think we can phone now? Oh, [the sun is] hot on me bum, that is! Did you put [SPF 20] on it or just 15?' ...we're just dying inside!
McIntyre: [Kids] spring things on you at the last minute! The other day, we're on our way out the door to school - my son's done quite well, really, he's got his pants on, he's even got his jumper on, he's holding his coat, we're nearly out the door, and then he just looks at me and goes 'Dad, it's Roman day.' What's Roman day? 'Everybody's got to go to school dressed as something from the Roman Empire.' [mimes looking at his watch] You're supposed to be at school in six minutes. What exactly did you expect me to do at this point?! Oh yes, when I was nine, I was a centurion! I think I still have my armour here in the cupboard! Let's not drive this morning, I've been hiding a horse and chariot in the garage! We'll arrive in style.
McIntyre [after the emergency room receptionist asks him if he's been attacked] No, I haven't been attacked! I don't go out [in a dentist's bib] expecting assault!
    • Then, due to the above mentioned frozen mouth he can't properly enunciate his name, leading to him mangling it into something along the lines of "Ackel Ackingcacker". When the nurse calls that name he doesn't initially put two and two together until the nurse asks him "Are you Ackel Ackingcacker?" and he replies that he isn't, and then when the nurse asks his name:
McIntyre: Ackel Ackingcacker! [eyes go wide with realization]' Oh yeah, haha! That is actually me. Sorry, chaps! Because my real name, obviously, is Ackel Ackingcacker, but here they know me as "Ackel Ackingcacker".
    • The whole thing culminates in him having to put on a hospital gown (much to his consternation, saying "I have a problem with my tooth, why do you need access to my ass?! There will be 'wepurcussions'!"), and although he is finally recognized by the anesthetist, he is told that although the guy's daughters are big fans, the guy and his wife aren't. He gets the tooth out, then wakes up having accidentally rolled out of the covers and is now mooning his entire family who have come to visit, to which one of his sons cheerfully states "Pants down, you're the loser!"
  • Heartwarming Moments: On his variety show, Michael McIntyre's Big Show, he has the mother of all heartwarming segments, "Unexpected Star." The idea is that ordinary folks who happen to have a secret passion for singing are nominated by their loved ones to have their dreams come true of performing on a West End stage. Michael creates an elaborate set-up that culminates in the Unexpected Star de Jour being surprised onstage with the opportunity to close out the show in a big production number. Their gobsmacked reactions when they suddenly find themselves in front of a standing, cheering crowd is one thing, but it's made even better when they're given the opportunity to dress up and savor their moment of glory. Regardless of whether or not they decide to pursue music, their joy at getting to show off their secret passion is infectious, and their nominators are usually overwhelmed with pride. It's free of any reality-show faux-sappiness and just leaves everyone with a happy feeling inside.
    • At least one Unexpected Star, hairdresser Natasha John, actually wound up playing the title role in the musical Call Me Diana (as in, Princess Diana of Wales) in London!
      • The majority of the guests also have active YouTube accounts, where they usually chime in to describe their experience and bask in another round of applause from the usually (surprisingly!) civil comments section. Anush, in particular (an 11-year-old singer who performed a Michael Jackson song), makes a point to congratulate every new Unexpected Star on their video.
