YMMV / Michael Jackson's Moonwalker

Go To

  • Awesome Music: It's a video game with Michael Jackson's own songs! And the Yamaha sound chip renditions of those songs gives us some of the best music ever pumped out on the Sega Genesis.
  • Difficulty Spike: the later rounds of the graveyard stage and the cave level in the Genesis version raise the difficulty considerably, due to the kids being much harder to find, and the enemies becoming much harder to beat. For example, the final bosses of the graveyard stage can drop bombs on you via detaching body parts, and Mr. Big's henchmen take several hits to kill in the cave level, despite being One Hit Point Wonders back in in the street level.
  • Fan-Preferred Cut Content: Unsurprisingly, many fans prefer the April 1990 prototype build of the game simply because "Thriller" accompanies the Woods levels, where as the final build replaces it with "Another Part of Me" due to legal reasons. Not only is it arguably one of Jackson's most famous songs, but the stage was very clearly designed with it in mind.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Its a fun game, but let's face it—the real reason people want to play it is for the novelty of being able to control the King of Pop himself.
  • No Problem with Licensed Games: While it's on the short side and repetitive, it's still a very fun arcade like platformer that thrives on novelty value. It has some sweet graphics and MJ's own kickass tunes to sweeten the deal. Sega notably highlighted the game as a Killer App for their Genesis Does ad campaign.
  • Quirky Work: It's a game where you control Michael Jackson using magic powers to kill robots, and you can turn into a robot upon grabbing a monkey. Also, one of your attacks is forcing all enemies to dance, which works as a Smart Bomb. Yeah.
