- Awesome Music: The whole album, though "Enter Sandman," "Sad But True," "The Unforgiven," "Nothing Else Matters" and "Wherever I May Roam" tend to stand out.
- Broken Base: Due to They Changed It, Now It Sucks!. Some fans accept it as a proper Metallica album, some don't. Hype Backlash and It's Popular, Now It Sucks! could figure in as well.
- Fan Nickname: The album is called Metallica, but pretty much everyone refers to it as "The Black Album" due to the band's logo and the Gadsden flag snake drawing being near-invisible against its entirely black background.
- Vindicated by History: Whilst the album isn't as beloved by the fandom as the previous four albums, it's far more respected by fans than it was back in 1991, with many now considering it a great album in its own right. What helped was the later hatred of Load, ReLoad, St. Anger and their collaborative album Lulu.
