YMMV / MementoMori: AFKRPG

Go To

  • Awesome Art: The watercolour aesthetic of the game is one of the most talked about aspects of the game, and it shows, right down to the tap effects resembling a splash of paint.
  • Awesome Music: As it turns out, the main draw of Memento Mori isn't the gameplay, but the music. And it's so good, they have their own page here.
  • Complacent Gaming Syndrome:
    • One tip given to most people is to level up the 5 best Witches in your collection, then put everyone else in Level Link. Chances are, a lot of people will recommend the humble Illya, your first Witch and starter character, because her skills make her especially useful for the A.A boss fight despite being Boring, but Practical.
    • Past a certain point, most people's 5 Witches will be Merlyn, Florence, Cordie, and two others. In fact, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who's cleared a later stage without at least two of those three. And a bit more down the line, it's Merlyn, Florence, Cordie, Lunalynn, and one other. Unless Fia is used, in which case it's her, Fenrir, Mertillier, Lunalynn, and one other.
    • In the main campaigns, the enemy version of Libra in particular can be very annoying to deal with due to her potential to one-shot a team member, especially if said member is the team's main healer or DPS. As a result, expect a lot of people's teams to have Soltina specifically to deal with her due to her "Snow Dream" active which can decrease Libra's Critical RES by 80% and inflicts Sleep for a turn (provided the dice rolls in your favour) and her "Sisterly Bond" passive which grants her 2 layers of [Multi-Barrier] (4 when upgraded), making her invincible for a while.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: While it is not confirmed by Bank of Innovation, it's heavily implied that Artie is on the autism spectrum due to her having No Social Skills, having a blunt speech pattern and a laser-focused interest in weapon forging that can be taken as a special interest.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Amour is the most popular non-limited character, due to her obsessive love for the Successor.
    • Cordie is second place behind Amour for non-limited characters, due to having one of the most well-liked personalities and some of the best skills in the game, being one of the few Witches without a very tragic story.
    • In the Japanese server, Cerberus and Rusalka are this. The took first place in the first and second surveys put out by BOI respectively, the former with her cute voice and having one of the best Laments, and the latter having one of the best character designs (if not outright the best), her Tsundere personality and her sheer utility being some of the reasons as to why.
  • Epileptic Trees: Due to the game's main story being Story Breadcrumbs with its lore post-Duchy of Fran being scattered between indexes and Character Memories, a lot of people have been trying to piece together the main plot of the story; most notably how the Calamity started and what exactly happened in the game's story.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Because it's easy to misspell Cordie's name as "Corgie", many players have started to refer her with that name. It helps that she's as cute as a corgi herself.
    • A number of players have also shortened Mertillier's name to just "Mert" because her name is also easy to misspell.
  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • Since Bach's Minuet in G Major was for his daughter Anna Magdalena and it's usually one of the first few music pieces taught to young children playing the piano, it's only natural that this song would be used as a basis for Natasha's Lament.
    • It's little wonder that A.A's Lament is based on Ievan Polka - the most famous cover of the folk song was done by Hatsune Miku, who is a voice synthesizer.
    • Amleth and Ophelia's relationship takes on a more symbolic meaning the moment one realizes that "Amleth" is just "Hamlet'' with the "H" moved to the back, and that Ophelia shares the same name as Hamlet's own love interest.
    • Cerberus's Lament is based on Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from The Planets suite by Gustav Holst. Not only is it very fitting because she has powers over lightning (matching with the God of Thunder in Roman Mythology who also gave his name to the planet), the piece is also no. 4 in the suite. Guess what's Cerberus's numerical designation in the Witches of Qlipha?
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • With SINoALICE of all games due to their dark fantasy nature and picture book-esque art. In fact, a lot of SINoALICE players picked up the game when it launched, and has players from the most powerful guilds among them.
    • The MementoMori fandom is also comrades-in-arms with takt op. Destiny's mobile game Takt.Op Symphony due to the high emphasis on music in both games, especially where the Witches of Qlipha are concerned due to the Musicarts Bolero, Swan Lake and Jupiter having their scores be the basis for Armstrong, Lunalynn and Cerberus's Laments respectively.
  • Funny Moments:
    • Mimi is full of these, ranging from her silly Lament to interactions with other witches not named Hathor.
    • Sivi also has some funny moments when she attempts to laze around, only to get caught by the Successor.
    • Richesse's 2nd active skill, "FlabbyCaptain! CHARGE!" has the eponymous flabbycatty throw itself at the enemy, sticking on to their faces and dealing damage. The mental image alone is worth a few chuckles.
    • Get Moddey (Summer) to UR rarity and she'll Lampshade what everyone's been thinking about Belle's outfit, all while being embarrassed about her own swimsuit.
    • While most of the witches have at least one line telling the workaholic Successor to take a break, Fia's delves into Black Comedy territory by threathening him to relax by making him watch her stab herself with her sword over and over. Meanwhile Stella goes into her "Sovereign of the Stars" act to tell him to rest... but ends by simply yelling at him to just go to sleep already in a manner similar to Morgana.
    • Pretty much any time an authority figure is Not So Above It All, such as Amleth excitedly calling Ophelia over for a game of chess and the Successor catching Elfriede of all people putting on cat ears and pretending to be a cat by meowing.
    • One of Illya (Another)'s homescreen lines has her distract the Successor from his work by asking him out. When he refuses (because of said work), she decides it's enough reason to destroy the world... which is enough for him to change his mind and let her happily bring him to a bakery she found the other day. One she reaches SR+, Iris finds out and isn't very happy about it, so Illya brings the Successor along so that she'll get into less trouble.
    • Speaking of Illya (Another), it feels like someone at BOI has it out for her as unlike other variants in which their profile doesn't change, Illya's profile actually shows that she gained 4kg between her regular and Super Mode selves. Illya can even lampshade it in her SSR homescreen line, much to her utter dismay.
  • Game-Breaker:
    • Regardless of tier list, everyone agrees that Fenrir, Cordie and Olivia are the Big Three of the game. Fenrir is one of the best healers while packing "Snow Wolf's Fangs" which reduces cooldown time for everyone else when active, Cordie can dish out a lot of damage within multiple hits with plenty of chances for a Critical with her eventually getting Debuff Immunity and Olivia is a support that can work with any team composition while being able to hold her own via "The Holy Flag Bearer". Fenrir becomes less relevant in later stages, but she remains the best choice in guild raids.
    • Merlyn's "Apprentice Wanted!" passive increases the chances of her and 1 adjacent ally dealing a critical hit, even more so if they're the only two left with additional DEF by 20% at max. level. Florence's skills consists of her increasing her ATK and a chance to deal critical hits. Put the both of them next to each other and watch with glee as they wipe floor after floor!
    • While she doesn't get to shine in the early game, Mimi has turned into a darkhorse for mid-game content, primarily due to her 2nd passive "Dancing Paw-tners" which inflicts [Resonance] on enemies with the highest and lowest DEF respectively. This makes her a surprisingly good choice for Stage 9-28 in the Holy See of Hainz, where she can help chip off HP from Florence and Merlyn.
    • Lunalynn doesn't become one until she gets to at least UR and level 240, and you have her unique weapon. Her Ice Coffin then deals 3 turns of [Silence] on a crit instead of 1 turn. Then watch as your team sweeps the enemies even before they can use their skills, to the point that she's in every team that made it to the latest few stages.
    • Out of the post-release Witches, Lea has it especially good for her due to [Stealth] from her 2nd passive "Paranoia" and her actives having the chance to inflict [Fainted] and [Decreased Chance to Evade] respectively. Her 2nd active "No Looking, No Laughing!!" especially makes her a heavy-hitter capable of keeping up with the likes of Cordie and Florence; even more so if she's paired with critical-hit buffer Merlyn.
    • Rusalka was very hyped by the fanbase and rightfully so when she launched. Her actives have her hit like a truck while also reducing the damage the enemy deals and multiplying her own if they're already inflicted with a debuff while her passives turn her into a tank with [Multi-Barrier] and if that isn't enough and her HP is below a certain threshold, buffs her PM DEF Break and CRIT RES. Problem is, she's a Witch of Qlipha which means she needs a lot of duplicates to fully bring out her power and since she's a limited-time character unlike Lunalynn above isn't very accessible to everyone.
    • If you're heading into a fight that you know will drag on for quite some time, take Fia with you; unlike other characters who perform better in longer fights like Rean, Fia's skills allow her to deal more damage the more turns taken in a fight AND she can increase the HP of her teammates using her own as a scale, which essentially makes her a Glass Cannon's BFF. She shines especially during guild battles because her skills make it so that she CANNOT die no matter how much damage she takes, making her an excellent tank. Even better? When she was first released everyone got a copy of her, allowing even the F2P players to get a taste of what she can do without breaking the bank (unless they want to raise her all the way to L5).
  • Genius Bonus: Cerberus's Lament begins with a clarinet solo from Holst's "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity". Now take a guess the name of the Roman God of Thunder, whose powers Cerberus also shares.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Illya being the best character to bring for A.A's boss fight all the way back in the Kingdom of Byrune becomes this during the 2nd half of the 1st Anniversary when all 10 Curses eventually converge into her, and with the combined powers of an angel and the demon lord, Illya herself becomes the 11th Witch of Qlipha with the designation of 0.
  • Les Yay: Did you really think that there wouldn't be any in a game whose story is told through Story Breadcrumbs, especially with a Improbably Female Cast? Repeat offenders include Florence/Fortina and Amleth/Ophelia.
  • Low-Tier Letdown:
    • Poor, poor Moddey. Out of all the SR Aura of Azure Witches, the dog-eared gravekeeper gets the short end of the power stick by having a lot of Situational Swords, a next-to-useless Unique Weapon and the only time she truly gets to shine is if the battle drags for a long time. While it turned out that her Counter was bugged, fixing it still didn't help her utility much. The only thing going for her is her very catchy Lament, though things somewhat turned around for the better with her Summer version.
    • Nearly every Aura of Emerald Witch geared towards being a damage-dealer is at risk of this because Cordie exists, but Ivy especially has it hard because some of the conditions she requires to make the most of her skills are difficult to achieve and the [Fainted] condition she can inflict is tied to a passive instead of an active, not to mention that plenty of witches do inflict that status already. It doesn't help that with the skills revamp making some dispellable buffs undispellable, nerfing her second skill hard, she went from being a viable use (alongside Cordie) in later Main Quest and Tower stages, to being useless again, with the introduction of Fia making things even worse. Nevertheless, she does find some sort of niche in the Emerald Tower of Infinity and if the player (somehow) feeds off Illya to another character without realizing her potential, she's one of the next best options to bring against A.A.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • ''MementoMori's just a music app that comes with a game.Explanation
    • We don't pull the Character Gacha for the gameplay. We pull for the music.Explanation
    • You guys got any more of these Kindling Orbs?Explanation
    • Foddered me off? Bet you wish you didn't now.Explanation
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Lea's skill voice lines in English is just her being terrified, but in Japanese we get to hear Reina Ueda's agonized screaming, which can really scare the crap out of the unaware (and possibly why some people do not deploy her in battle often despite having good skills).
    • Get Elfriede to UR+ and the demon that's made itself at home in her body will show up to say hi in the homescreen. And you thought Bernkastel was bad enough...
  • She Really Can Act: Actually more like "She Can Really Sing". While most Laments are sung by known Japanese singers/indie English singers, quite a number of players were taken aback by Shuka Saito's vocals for Cerberus's Lament "IV: THE THUNDER" due to the extensive range, especially since prior to this game she was best known as You Watanabe, making her stand out from the other Witches whose Laments are sung by their respective voice actresses.
  • Shocking Moments; Oh, Illya's the 2nd Character for the 1st Anniversary! I wonder what she's like- She's an Aura of Chaos Witch?! And she's Witch of Qlipha no. 0?! Oh, Crap!
  • Suspiciously Similar Song:
    • In an odd case of a game doing this to themself, the title song, "Anemone", has the exact same tune as Amour's Lament "EtoilĂ©". To date, there hasn't been an in-universe explanation as to why this is the case.
    • Part of Matilda's Lament "Sea of Light" has traces of Elfriede's Lament in it for unknown reasons.
  • That One Boss: A.A, the 4th Witch of Qlipha faced and the Final Boss of the Kingdom of Byrune, is considered one of the hardest bosses in the game. Her skills go out fast, which can level entire teams if not careful. The most common solution to defeat her is to bring Illya, and pray that her 1st active hits.
  • That One Level: In general, any level with one or more of the witches listed in Game-Breaker. However, there are some standouts:
    • 8-28, the last stage in the Kingdom of Byrune, is where players face off against That One Boss A.A. Because of how fast A.A can bring out her skills and that she has a passive that inflicts [Bleed] on her opponents, nearly everyone recommends Illya and hope that she gets a high critical hit with her 1st active and that [Fainted] also hits.
      • And if that wasn't enough, A.A returns as a normal witch no longer burdened with her Witch of Qlipha status in 11-24 and she's now accompanied by Olivia, Illya, a warlock and a pixie. With Olivia putting up defenses and Illya doing to you what you did to A.A prior, expect to be stuck there for a while. And that's without knowing that the next big boss after that is Fortina...
    • 9-28 is considered the biggest roadblock in the Holy See of Hainz. Remember how Florence and Merlyn make one of the biggest Game-Breaker combinations? Now you have to face them as enemies and be on the receiving end of said combination. With Merlyn's skills, Florence can deliver critical hit after critical hit on your party with the potential to OHKO your entire team, meaning that in order to fend them off you either need a girl with [Shield] or [Multi-Barrier], debuffers, or if you have her, Mimi for her 2nd passive.
    • 11-20 is just as bad, if not worse than 9-28 with its numerous gimmicks. However, if the opposing Dian is the first one down the rest should be no problem... we hope.
    • For the later stages, any stage with any two of Carol, Cordie and Primavera (or god forbid, all three of them). Carol's DEF buff makes Cordie harder to defeat (already no mean feat because you can't debuff Cordie), Primavera increases Cordie's speed which means your own damage dealer needs higher level speed runes than usual to outspeed her, and against Carol/Primavera, the same applies to Nina or Lunalynn (depending on who you use to deal with Carol). Later still, the main culprits are Cordie and Amour, the latter being able to effectively One-Hit KO any two of your characters the first time she is defeated (and revived), due to how her first passive skill works. This is in fact why 23-28 is seen as easier than both 23-26 and 23-27, the only case where a Witch of Qlipha boss stage isn't the outright hardest stage in its chapter. At least, if you aren't using Fia; with her, only Cordie remains an issue, and only in the Main Quest (due to enemies in Tower dealing much less damage than their Main Quest counterparts), as the others can be worn down by Lunalynn's debuffs and Fia's heavily damaging direct attack, which ignores DEF.
  • Unconventional Learning Experience: Fans of the Witches of Qlipha can now use their Laments to learn more about Classical Music and traditional songs thanks to Sampling. More often than not, everytime a new member is Promoted to Playable, expect the first thing players ask to be "which song is it based on?".
  • The Woobie: The entire cast; trying to save a world that ignores them at best and being targeted by a Corrupt Church simply because of their existences as Witches during a time of crisis at worst. This is especially prevalent with the Witches of Qlipha, who lose control of their powers and spread country-wide destructive curses after suffering immense amounts of negative emotions.
