- Awesome Music: The final hospital scene where Greg and Rachel watch the movie together is made a hundred times more heartbreaking by the inclusion of Brian Eno's "The Big Ship", a haunting and melancholy ambient piece that practically embodies the Five Stages of Grief in the span of three minutes.
- Base-Breaking Character: Greg all the way. He's either sympathetic and amusing enough to root for, or he's completely insufferable and uninteresting compared to the other characters, to the point several reviewers have considered him one of the movie's low points.
- Ensemble Dark Horse: Greg's dad. Being played by Nick Offerman certainly helps.
- There's also "Ill Phil," the school's Large Ham resident rapper.
- Genius Bonus: Greg is played by Thomas Mann, who shares a name with the author of Death in Venice, one of the films Greg and Earl parody.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: One of Greg and Earl's films mentioned in the book is Batman vs Spider-Man. Come 2017, and Spider-Man is going to fight Batman. Not to mention that the two got a DEATH BATTLE!.
- Jerkass Woobie: Greg may be an insensitive jerk many times, but it's also obvious how lonely, self-loathing, and insecure he really is.
- Moe: Rachel all the way through.
- One-Scene Wonder: Hugh Jackman in a Voice-Only Cameo, playing the Wolverine poster in Rachel's wall who delivers Greg a scathing "The Reason You Suck" Speech for his insensitive jokes.
- Retroactive Recognition: That's The Punisher as Mr. McCarthy!
- Plus Earl is Billy Cranston.
- Unconvincingly Unpopular Character: Greg and Earl, to some extent.
- The Woobie: Rachel once again, the poor girl.
