YMMV / Mazinger Z: Infinity

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Dr. Hell, stripped of all redeeming qualities, is a ruthless Mad Scientist who sees the world as imperfect and flawed. Deciding to return and create a new world, Dr. Hell erases an entire city to try to get at Mazinger before attempting to murder Tetsuya Tsurugi after coldly trying to deprive him of all hope. In the ensuing battle, Dr. Hell attempts to annihilate the universe and all that lives just so he can recreate it as the new god, not even showing any care or remorse when his loyal servants die in combat for him.
  • Crowning Moment of Awesome:
    • The ending when everyone across the globe gives Mazinger Z all the energy they can spare in the final battle against the Mazinger Infinity.
    • Just before that, all three of Kenzo Kabuto’s sons working together to defeat the Great Marshal of Hell.
  • He Really Can Act:
    • Mike Pollock is best known for voicing laughably evil and comical villains, such as Dr. Eggman. But here, he proves he can also portray a dark and sinister villain like Dr. Hell incredibly well, and he really nails the role.
    • Dan Green as Tetsuya deserves praise too. He sells that mecha pilot hot-bloodedness with all the ham he can muster, outright channeling Yami Yugi (Or Kotaro Taiga) in several scenes.
  • Questionable Casting: Some of the fans do not approve of Toshihiko Seki's voice acting for Tetsuya due to being the least matched with the original voice.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Many fans feel that while this movie is not bad by any means, it feels quite inferior to the escalating awesomeness of previous installments in the franchise, such as Mazinkaiser, Shin Mazinger, and Mazinkaiser SKL.
  • Superlative Dubbing: The Japanese cast is somewhat contested, as many fans heavily prefer the voices and performances from Shin Mazinger. The English Dub on the other hand, provided by NYAV Post, has many experienced voice actors, several of which had been in classic anime, cartoons and games. The result is a fantastic Dub with incredible performances, with a feeling of nostalgia thanks to hearing familiar voices.
  • Tear Jerker: The ending theme song, The Last Letter. A nostalgic ballad playing over a modernized recreation of the original Mazinger Z ending credits sequence.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • A lot of fans were disappointed that Baron Ashura and Count Broken's roles were largely underused, especially when compared to their appearances in the previous installments. Granted, they do both get to battle Koji Kabuto in the movie, but still.
    • The Mazin-Girls also could have done with some more characterization.
    • This turns out to be exactly why anything from UFO Robo Grendizer isn't even mentioned, because the staff knew this would be the reaction since its involvement wasn't planned, though it's confirmed the series still happened.
