• Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Tin-Chi's fight with Sadi after the house-fire. The latter effectively attacks Tin-Chi without reason and neither combatant exchanges any dialog to give it one. They simply trade some blows before moving on and it never comes up again.
• Complete Monster: Owen Davidson, seemingly a kind pillar of the community, is a racist criminal and crime lord who does business by forcing a gangster to shoot his friend to join him, before laughing and admitting he didn't actually care or need the test. Later abducting one hero, Fu, Davidson tortures and brutally beats him to death, with his goal being to flood Hong Kong with heroin while being heedless of the deaths and ruined lives this will cause.
• Moral Event Horizon:
  • Kit crosses it but, depending on where you think is either by burning Tin-chi's house that could've killed Cheung Fong or killing Nana by overdosing her with cocaine.
  • The British police commissioner crosses it when he framed Fu for drugs in order to get him killed by Owen below.
  • Owen Davidson crosses it when he killed Fu for interfering with his drug business.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The movie tries to present Kwan as a sympathetic Anti-Villain who's trying to go straight and calls out the Merchant's Association for their hypocrisy. And she tries to make restitution for some of the things her brother does. However, it does not change the fact that at the end of the day, she aided and abetted a murderous, sociopathic thug who forcefully overdosed a woman to death in escaping town with her. The film makes a big deal about how she calls out the Merchant's Association for their hypocrisy and had any of those people killed Nana by overdosing her, Kwan would likely have been outraged and would probably have sided with Tin-chi. But because it's her brother who committed the evil deed, she'll go out of her way to protect him, cover up his crime, and help him skip town, making it really hard to view her as any better than some of the foreigners who also hide their criminal activities in the merchant guild, no matter how honest or well-intentioned she may be.
