• Unintentionally Sympathetic: The book is theoretically supposed to be Sloane Kelly's Start of Darkness... except between most of the rest of the Initiative leadership being idiots or worse, not to mention the book ending just after the exiles get exiled, before Sloane goes on to become the bad-tempered, drug-dealing, fee-levying, head-on-spike loving ruler of Kadara, so we don't see how she became that person. Sloane herself comes across as the Only Sane Man. Basically, a Start of Darkness without the actual darkness.
