YMMV / Maryse

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Era: Her 2010 push as Divas' Champion is seen as the low point in her career; making it clear she'd lost any flair she originally displayed in the ring (while she'd regressed in 2009, fans were willing to overlook it because she was working with an injury and had some good matches with Gail Kim). She would do mostly two moves per match, and have a forgettable title reign. Once Alicia Fox was swapped out as the top heel, and Maryse became a valet to Ted Di Biase Jr, she managed to shake some of the hate off - since she was at least focusing on the strength of her character.
  • Awesome Ego: It's amazing how full of herself she can get, particularly during her first run.
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: It's often forgotten that Maryse is actually a two-time Divas' Champion, and was in fact the longest reigning champ before A.J. Lee surpassed it (she was later surpassed by Nikki Bella). Maryse's most memorable traits are the hair flip, sexy ring attire and suggestive pin attempts.
  • Broken Base:
    • Her 2016 return. A welcome return of one of the most charismatic bad girls in recent history? Or a bad reminder of the "Diva" era that serves no purpose other than to help her husband take TV time from someone more deserving? This intensified with her getting a WrestleMania match when she hadn't even been in the division - especially since Natalya had been feuding with Nikki and was then shunted into a multi-woman match that got relegated to the kickoff show. Then again, she cut some of the best promos of her career, and the match ended up getting far more excitement once the build-up started happening.
    • Another problem people picked out with her return is that it immediately led to Miz holding the Intercontinental title for the majority of 2016 while almost exclusively retaining the belt with screwy finishes. Of course, this also stopped being a problem due to the fact that their heel act together gave the Intercontinental title more heat and prestige than it had had in a long time.
  • Catharsis Factor: John Cena tearing into her on the final Smackdown before WrestleMania 33 is very satisfying for fans who hated her for the reasons under Creator's Pet and X-Pac Heat.
"The reason they didn't want you back is because when you were here before, you didn't do jack. You don't believe me, get on the WWE Network right now and search for 'Best of Maryse'."
  • Creator's Pet: Initially in 2009-2010 where her wrestling was subpar but she was pushed to the top of the division. Management however then quickly had her drop the title and pushed her aside in favour of Alicia Fox - giving her a valet role which was arguably focusing on the strength of her character.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Had a fair share of crowds cheering her because of how hot she was, and how strong her character too.
  • Funny Moments:
    • She celebrated her release from WWE by ordering cakes and having a party.
    • After a long losing streak, she managed to get a win over Brie Bella in a 6-person tag. She celebrated this by randomly high-fiving Michael Cole afterwards.
    • She teamed with Jillian to face the Bella Twins. Jillian did a random imitation of her Hair Flip, and Maryse could be seen Corpsing as she saw it.
    • And when Kelly Kelly mocked the hair flip in a tag match, Maryse's face was again priceless.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Once blindsided Eve Torres backstage and took photos of herself posing over Eve's unconscious body. Two years later when it was Eve's turn to be the heel Divas' Champion, she did the same thing to her opponents after she had beaten them.
  • Love to Hate: In her initial push and after becoming a manager. She played such a convincing Alpha Bitch that fans just loved it.
  • Memetic Loser: She established herself as the ultimate Faux Action Girl as of her WrestleMania 33 mixed tag teaming with The Miz. Reports hyped up how much she'd been training to get into the ring again, and she was presented as a threat in promos...only to do next to nothing in the match itself. Any big moves Nikki Bella does are suspiciously sold by Miz instead. John Cena had verbally buried her on the previous Smackdown before the PPV, treating her as though she didn't have two Divas' Championship reigns (and was at one point the longest reigning champion before AJ Lee surpassed her). Her lack of involvement in the match just seemed to back up his claims.
  • Memetic Mutation: Maryse's hand gesture made it into a lot of memes.
  • Narm:
    • She made her return to Raw in 2009 attacking Melina brutally. A return which would have been very effective...if it wasn't done on a Thanksgiving-themed episode. Melina had wrestled in a "Mayflower Melee" match dressed in a sexy Native American costume. And Maryse attacked her while dressed as The Gobbledy Gooker. Maryse also unmasks dramatically and then spends a few extra seconds trying to remove the elaborate costume.
    • She also got slapped by Cherry and oversold it hilariously.
  • Once Original, Now Common: It might be hard for newer fans to see why Maryse caught on and became such a darkhorse among Diva fans in her time. The first is that she was very good at playing her character - by 2008, most of the Divas were either generic faces or generic heels (Melina generally agreed to be the exception), and WWE's Tamer and Chaster direction with the PG switch meant that Maryse stuck out even more with her sexual image. The second is that none of this affected her wrestling ability at all; Maryse's character would normally belong to a valet who would pull off Distracted by the Sexy and only get into a Cat Fight. Many of the other Diva Search girls gave the impression they were trying to move away from their Ms. Fanservice roots - while Maryse was unashamedly both a glamorous Diva and an effective wrestler. The Bella Twins, Summer Rae, Carmella, Alexa Bliss and arguably The Iconics were her Spiritual Successors. There's a very good reason why her Hair Flip ring entrance was homaged so much.
  • Sexy Villains, Chaste Heroes: She was an especially notable example during the PG Era of WWE - where Contractual Purity among the Divas was a mainstay.
  • Take That, Scrappy!:
    • To Michael Cole, "Oh my God, Michael Cole, you vintage nerd"
    • One directed at her. The Miz: "You're not a champion, you're a tease...you had your chance with me and you butchered it. Just like you butcher the English language every time you open your mouth". Hilarious in Hindsight considering they're married in real life.
    • And John Cena after weeks of The Miz and Maryse spreading slanderous rumours about him and Nikki.
"Last week she picked up a 210 pound guy and threw him around like he was a waste of space. Every week you show up here, steal a paycheck and you are a waste of space."
  • Vindicated by History: Diva fans fondly remember her character now that she's not being pushed as a wrestler.
  • X-Pac Heat: Diva fans hated her during her title push in 2009-2010 and not in the way they were supposed to.
