YMMV / Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
  • Demonic Spiders: Evil Puck and Evil Daredevil mooks can be this if you don't know how to deal with them.
  • Game-Breaker: the Power Gem, as its name implies, increases the attacking power of the user, which means in-game that you can deal twice as much damage as normal, enabling you to take down the bosses in a matter of seconds.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The Infinity Gems are an important part of game mechanics, first seen in Marvel Super Heroes. Years later, they're once again a vital part of gameplay in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The instant you enter the temple in the Egypt stage, walls collapse behind and in front of you, and a spiked ceiling starts to slowly descend. You want to get out of there as soon as possible because just thinking about being crushed under the One-Hit Kill spikes can be very frightening. Even worse if you're playing as Iron Man, and you forget that his Combo Finisher is a Shoryuken variant, which lifts Shellhead into the air.
  • No Problem with Licensed Games: Considering it's made by Capcom, this is definitely played straight.
  • Spiritual Successor: The game is this to X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse; both games are Beat 'em Up with Platform Game elements, developed by Capcom, both games has the same mechanics and graphic style, even Wolverine's sprites are reused.
  • That One Boss: The Magus. When you reach The Magus's cabin, he starts the battle by piercing a hole in the wall and the force of the space vacuum sucking the air inside makes it a lot harder to move. The Magus himself likes to teleport a lot, and if he catches you off-guard, he'll combo you to death. He also shoots a fireball that homes into you and is very hard to dodge. When he has less than half of his health, he sometimes recovers a big bunch of his health, and is completely invincible while doing this, so you have to be very fast to beat him. Whoever says they were able to beat The Magus in their first attempt is lying.
    • Some other bosses have the potential to be That One Boss: We have for example, Evil Daredevil, the boss of Arizona Mining Complex. Fast and unpredictable, so you practically have to guess if he's going to attack on the ground or the air. Sometimes when he jumps, he clings on you and sucks half of your lifebar. And let's also add that there are two annoying laser cannons at the sides of the boss's room, which you have to take care of first before facing the boss. The problem is, they reappear after a few seconds.
    • If you choose to go through the lower path in Alaska stage, you'll have a tough fight against three Evil Puck minibosses, almost as annoying as Evil Daredevil, but times 3. They like to jump and roll attack you, forcing you to constantly jump to dodge the first, only to be hit by a second one. If you're not careful, one might cling on you and bite you to death, or if you get too close to one, he'll grab you and throw you to the ground.
    • Dr. Doom can also be this if you don't know how to deal with him. All of his attacks deal a lot of damage, and his laser beam comes out very fast and is very hard to read and dodge, especially if you play as Cap, Iron Man or Hulk, since crouching is useless against this attack. If he starts floating in the air, he might choose between firing a spread of lasers above you, or dive kicking you.
  • That One Level: Boston Aquarium takes place in a flooded aquarium. The water slows you down (and the baddies), and you have an Oxygen Meter that slowly depletes; if you run out of air, you don't instantly drown. Instead, your lifebar starts depleting, which is particularly bad if you're low on energy after being hit for the nth time. The second part is particularly frustrating because you have to fight an Evil Vision miniboss who isn't too hard per se, but it's hard to beat him quickly because of the difficulty to move fast when underwater.
    • The Asteroid Belt stage takes place in... well, an asteroid belt. You have to jump from platform to platform, avoiding the debris that is floating all around the place. The debris don't deal much damage per se, but if you're not careful, one of these can knock you off an edge to your death. Pray if you're low on energy when you get to the miniboss battle with Dr. Doom. Fortunately you don't have to worry about suffocating in space.
