YMMV / Marvel: Crisis Protocol

  • Broken Base: The game's use of "tactical rocks"; scenery on a miniature's base intended to allow for a greater variety of poses, or in some cases to allow for a levitation effect via Forced Perspective to make the miniature's support less obvious. Some fans love it for giving a much wider variety of dynamic poses, and for really fitting the superhero comic theme. Another side dislikes the trend, feeling that a consequence of making the miniatures too detailed is that they lose opportunities for individual customisation, and that it is much easier for miniatures to look out of place if the tactical rocks and game scenery don't match. The debate likely hit its peak with Domino's model and its 'standing on an exploding rock' pose. Cool and creative, or ridiculously unfitting in 99% of gameplay and display circumstances?
  • Game-Breaker: Early in the game's life, "Drop Off" was a notoriously busted card. It gave the ability for characters with Flight to move any allied character with them during their activation, giving them a free attack action at the end of it. This shifted the game towards using a flier to move your highest-value piece as close to the center of the board as you can, with matches devolving down to whichever player could perform the best Drop Off. The card was ultimately banned from the game altogether and replaced with "Special Delivery", which has the same effect but is limited to the A-Force affiliation and only allows She-Hulk to be moved. This more limited version of the card was much better received for being more predictable while giving both She-Hulk and the A-Force a defining battle plan.
  • Unexpected Character: The Falcon getting in was a bit of a no-brainer. The fact that it would be via his Captain America incarnation, however, was a much bigger surprise.
