YMMV / Maka Maka

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: The final battle with Makamaka. Due to an apparent bug, his second form goes down in one hit.
  • Awesome Music:
    • While the game itself isn't that great, the music, composed by Tomohisa Mitsuyasu of the band J-Walk, is totally rockin'.
    • The guy is also responsible for the music to the game Road Blaster, on the Sega CD, as well as the game's spiritual successor Day of the Idea and a number of the early Fist of the North Star titles (which Office Koukan was also behind).
  • Game-Breaker
    • El's Pawado Dress is her best armor due to a bug, and can be found very early on.
    • El's Double Power Transform Skill does exactly what it sounds like.
    • Ul Ul Boy's Field Barrier Transform Skill nullifies physical attacks for the entire party, and is gained right before the final dungeon.
  • Good Bad Bug: There are a couple of these:
    • For some unexplained reason driving the Ul Ul Car into anything on the world map triggers a battle sequence. The player can use this to speed up the leveling process
    • One of Michael's Transform Skills is bugged and doesn't use any TP.
    • Thanks to a bug, El's Pawado Dress is one of the strongest equipment for her and can be found very early on.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Several of the enemy and boss designs are very creepy, such as giant human heads.
    • Princess Gourmet turns the human villagers into croquettes to eat them alive, and does this to the protagonists.
  • Obvious Beta: The developers were under pressure to get the game completed by a certain date. When that deadline came and the game still wasn't complete, Sigma Enterprise released it anyway. The result was a mess of bugs that contributed to the game's overall weirdness.
  • Quirky Work: Bosses and enemies include giant human heads and walking noses, there's an alien princess who eats people and attacks by farting, and the entire game in general is very, very weird.
  • Signature Scene: Princess Gourmet's scenario and battle is one of the most famous parts of the game, due to being early on, easy to understand even if you don't speak Japanese, and a good example of how weird the game is.
  • So Bad, It's Good: The game is renowed for its weirdness and Obvious Beta status, two factors that helped the game reach cult status.
  • Spiritual Successor: The creator of the game, Office Koukan, made another RPG after this known as Idea No Hi, or Day of the Idea. It's got an oddball sense of humor similar to Maka Maka's, but a more serious story, fairly interesting gameplay mechanics, and actual bug-testing to its name.
  • Squick: Princess Gourmet's insides and method of attack are disgusting, and her brother King Gluttony is even worse.
  • That One Boss: Dekaiken, Old Lady Harite, and Baseran come to mind.
    • To make things even crazier—Part of the Big Bad's evil plot? To turn the world's populace into giant water fleas! Which he is able to do to the protagonist's parents at the very beginning of the game for some reason, which starts the game off.
