YMMV / Majisuka Gakuen

Go To

  • Crazy Is Cool: Even though Gekikara's character is known for being particularly crazy, she is arguably the most popular character and a fan favorite by most.
    • During concerts, if they do a Majisuka skit (which would usually lead to them singing a song like "Majisuka Rock 'n Roll" or "Majijo Teppen Blues", etc.), the crowd goes WILD when Rena comes out as Gekikara.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Gekikara and Nezumi have become quite popular and their actresses often reprise those roles in other events.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Center's actress, Matsui Jurina, has been the center (lead singer) in many AKB and SKE songs, but she had also been obsessed with taking first place (i.e. becoming the center) in the Senbatsu Elections for years, to the point of being seen as overly ambitious by some fans. She finally did that in 2018 when she became the World Senbatsu Center.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: Most common complaint about 4 is that is basically a reboot of the first season but using members pushed currently by management. However, most complaints were shut out when 5 came out...
  • Just Here for Godzilla: If you were a fan of the group before watching the drama, most probable case is that you started the series to watch your oshi in action.
  • Les Yay: Can be found in several parts of the show. Probably one of the most notable is Gakuran.
    • Center constantly telling Nezumi she loves her.
    • Uruseeyo and Tetsuo are a butch couple.
    • One side story episode in Season 4 is Uonome getting into a HILARIOUS misunderstanding where she thinks Jisedai confesses to Dodobusu, and later, that Kusogaki confesses to HER! Hilarity ensues.
    • In the musical, two members of Team Kebab (played by Takahashi Juri and Oshima Ryouka) are in a secret relationship.
    • In Season 1, there's Atsuko and Minami, AND Yuko and Sado.
    • Center and Nezumi (given the popular ship name CenNezu) in Season 2! And to an extent, Dance and Shibuya.
    • Several pairings in Season 3 (Two most notable are Paru x Peace and Nobunaga x Annin)
    • Salt x Otabe and Antonio x Kobi in Seasons 4 and 5.
    • There is a scene in Cabasuka where Katabutsu/Karei pretends to be a lesbian and in a relationship with Magic/Gari in order to get rid of a Stalker with a Crush. Sakura then shows him a picture of the two kissing. What's more, the kiss itself was not faked.
    • Episode 3 of Majimuri contains a kiss scene between Kaiser and Eins.
  • Narm:
    • Maeda not doing anything for most of 2 other than wandering around and eating cherry petals.
    • Sakura and Antonio's mourning scene in season 5 might've worked better without the dialog in the middle. Justified since both of them are not used to showing emotions.
Antonio: This hot liquid... is this tears?
Sakura: Yes, tears overflowing with sadness.
    • In Majimuri, the last of the Hana-gumi have been arrested and are tied to wooden poles, ready to be executed... with a saucepan full of sewer water.
  • Narm Charm:
  • Nightmare Fuel: Gekikara and her crazy expressions are chilling. She also disturbs Maeda more than any of the others that challenged her before, having her walk around in a state of nightmare flashes before they even fight.
    • What's even more horrifying, though, is when you learn about her past. (See Majisuka Gakuen)
  • Real Song Theme Tune: The theme song for Cabasuka is the AKB48 46th A-side single "High Tension", which was not specifically written for and marketed separately from the series. A remix of "Alone" by Marshmello is also often used for the club scenes.
  • She Really Can Act: While many of the performances in this series leave much to be desired, Maeda Atsuko, Watanabe Mayu (Nezumi), Matsui Jurina (Center), Matsui Rena (Gekikara), the entire Rappappa in season 4, and several others went on to have relatively successful acting careers.
  • Special Effects Failure:
    • In 0, Sashihara Rino clearly switched to flat shoes for the final duel.
    • The explosion in Majimuri's final battle is just ugly.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Seasons 1-3 had to include a Content Warning about the poor acting. Season 4 was a considerable improvement and season 5 even more so, although some were put off by the increased violence. Meanwhile, Cabasuka is a nice change of pace as it is much more lighthearted and Fanservice-y.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • Some people didn't take well that the third season featured a new cast and a different setting, even less that the protagonist, instead of Atsuko Maeda (who couldn't have participated, as she was soon graduating) was Haruka Shimazaki.
    • Season 5's bloodier nature, with characters actually suffering violent deaths, is also a turn-off for some, who argue that the show is supposed to appeal to young girls to get them interested in joining the 48 Group.
    • Majimuri attempts to have a Darker and Edgier story with allusions to fascism, Joan of Arc, the French Revolution, and Nazi Germany, which results in less room for the cast to play up their idol personas and develop their characters like in previous seasons.
      • Almost half of the cast are from outside the 48 Group and overshadow the idols in many scenes, since most of the latter lack acting experience. Exceptions include Mukaichi Mion (Bara) and Taniguchi Megu (Zwei), who have played other characters in previous seasons (the former has performed in movies and TV dramas since childhood), and Lily's actress also seems to exceed many people's expectations.
      • The casting of Oguri Yui as Lily is also seen by some as excessive management push of her and Team 8, one reason being that, unlike her predecessors, she has never made it into Senbatsu in the general elections.
  • Vanilla Protagonist: While the main characters do have backstories and go through Character Development, the rest of the cast are arguably more colorful than them.
