• Ensemble Dark Horse: The Destroid Monster, who has appeared in some form in every animated entry. Even the non-canon Macross II has the Giant Monster.
• Spiritual Antithesis: With Mobile Suit Gundam. On the surface they are quite similar, especially in their opening arcs; a space opera pitting a lone ship and its crew against a horde of implacable foes. Both stories are replete with a wide variety of mecha, starships, and other vehicles, philosophical musings, tumultuous romantic subplots, and spectacular battles, but differ widely in the thrust of the message. While Gundam is infamous for focusing on the human costs of war and the inevitability of mankind's greedy and self-destructive inner nature, Macross concerns itself with the hope that love, understanding, and culture can overcome the barriers and conflicts that separate different peoples.
