YMMV tropes for the Luz Clawthorne series

Tropes with their own pages:

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: When the nun in Chapter 2 asked Eda to read the letter she wrote before attempting to give Luz away, was she aware that Eda didn't want to give up Luz, or did Eda's tearful reading of the letter convince the nun that Eda was the perfect mother for Luz?
  • Awesome Music: The story's chock-full of covers and parodies of great music, about half of which are from other Disney series. Buck actually created a playlist dedicated to Emily Tricks featuring songs she performed in the story or would best describe her character as a whole, which can be heard here.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The rap battle segment within the What If? chapter segment, "What if... Luz and Amity had their Witch's Duel", is literally something out of a Youtube rap battle video.
  • Bizarro Episode: The holiday one-shots aren't linked to the main storyline. Zig-Zagged for "Somhaim Tales of the Boiling Isles", since the framing device of the holiday isn't canon but the revelations of Dr. Bride, the Inner Demon and Eda acquiring the Owl House are confirmed to be.
  • Can't Un-Hear It: It's hard not to picture any canon characters with their respective voices but with the Ruder and Cruder style the series has, it's a shock to imagine Sarah-Nicole Robles constantly dropping Cluster F-Bombs all the time.
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • Given how much of a bitch Nicole is, seeing her receive punishment is always quite refreshing.
    • After eighty-one years of being a Karma Houdini since his original film, the Coachman getting his long-deserved comeuppance at the end of Chapter 5 of Two Worlds, One Family is sure to invoke cheers among long-time Disney fans.
    • Emily Tricks spends a huge chunk of Book 2 planning out a massive school war that'll double as a plan to kill Luz without hesitating to kill any of her allies should they waver. Seeing her getting dragged off by the Emperor's Coven for conspiring with a criminal organization (particularly after stabbing both Luz and Nina) while having a Villainous Breakdown is a sight to imagine.
    • Mel is definitely deserving of her punishment at the end of the "Underworld" arc. After dividing the Blight family, making Lilith and Odalia pariahs, sending Emily to the Underworld, kidnapping Edric, King and the Holder Brothers, trying to start a cult following and kill anyone who'd refuse to worship her while releasing Cronus the God Eater from Tartarus, outing Amity as a Fae to the Isles and kicking her while she was down at every chance she got, the Curb-Stomp Battle she receives from the Clawthornes, Amity, Willow, Gus, Boscha, Hunter, Edric, the Holders, Emily, Cross, and Lindsay (especially since the latter two are the reason she was put on the ropes) and being eaten by Cronus were extremely satisfying.
    • The deaths of the Big Bad Duumvirate to the "Tarot Guild' arc, the Inner Demon and Terra Snapdragon, are most certainly this for their overarching villainy throughout the story. The Inner Demon ends up being outsmarted by Luz and Maya, then gets forced back into the real world and is taken by the Baron to the loa realm. Beforehand, Terra gets curb-stomped by Willow (who underwent a Next Tier Power-Up) before Belos shows up and absorbs her soul for the Horned King to claim, ridding the Isles of her presence for good.
  • Complete Monster: "Stranger Danger" sees the appearance of The Coachman, a particular nasty Fae, has for centuries tricked an untold number of children into coming to Pleasure Island in order to have them transformed into donkeys against their wills and sell them into forced labor. After having done this many times before, the Coachman moves his operations to the Boiling Isles, intending to enslave and torture the witchlings that he lures to his amusement park trap. Admitting to being a Child Hater motivated by sheer spite, the Coachman attempts to murder Luz and Amity when they discover his scheme and try to stop him.
  • Crack Pairing: Emira/Viney, Skara/Willow, Edric/Hunter, Eda/Stan, Lilith/Ford, Bo/Mattholomule, Amelia/Gus (teased but ultimately shot down), Anne/Marcy, and Star/Vee.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Downplayed since only one person made the diagnosis, but Donna had difficulty adjusting to change when she was a bit younger, which hinted at her having autism.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Amelia and Cat, both minor recurring characters in canon with no personalities or proper interactions outside of being friends with each other or Boscha, received Ascended Extra status and their popularity skyrocketed thanks to their Character Development and increased relationships between characters. In fact as Cat became a fan favorite of Crash X Fusion, Buck decided to give her and Amelia larger roles in Book 2.
    • Nina Fangs and Donna Masterskull seem to also qualify as a result of being close Childhood Friends on the verge of a Childhood Friend Romance in addition to Nina's status as Jerkass Woobie and Foil to Skara and Donna's possession of a keyblade. Helps that they're inspired by Adora and Catra. In fact, Nina and Donna became so popular with both the authors and the readers for their Story Arc that they joined the main cast in the third quarter of Book 2.
    • Zee Drakescale, Cross's older sister, ended up becoming a fan favorite in her own right, especially after she started getting Ship Tease moments with Emily.
    • Tabrella Diamanto, a down-to-Titan St. Epidermite who's a teen mom and a witch parody of Rarity, certainly has her fans.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • In Chapter 36, Boscha is thoroughly chewed out by Skara for sabatoging Luz and Amity's relationship and ultimately gives up on their friendship as a result. This ended up stinging Boscha even more than people thought, as Chapter 45 reveals that she has a crush on Skara and her attempts to control her were out of fear of losing her. So when Skara entered a relationship with Willow, Boscha was left heartbroken.
    • "Chapter 45: Stranger Danger" shows that the Coachman had decided that all children, (girls too, not just "stupid little boys") were brats. The teaser trailer for the 2022 live-action remake of Pinocchio shows girls among the group taken to Pleasure Island.
    • The series's 50th chapter has a much more heartwrenching take on the climactic confrontation between Amity and Odalia in "Clouds on the Horizon", both having Amity disowning Odalia and Alador losing all respect for her after discovering she's been keeping a massive secret from them (here, it's because Odalia was the one who told Lilith to curse Eda; in the episode, they learn she knows about the Draining Spell and she's selling out all witchkind under the belief that Belos will make her a noble after the Day of Unity.) Unlike her canon counterpart, Odalia actually feels guilty over her actions turning her whole family against her.
    • Also in Chapter 50, Amity's eyes turn pink to symbolize her severed connection to the Blight family. In "Thanks to Them", Hunter's eyes go from pink to brown as a reminder of Flapjack's sacrifice.
    • The possibility of Luz's father being dead has been used in some fanfics, and this one is no exception. "Reaching Out" officially confirming it in canon makes it harsh, but considering he died while Luz was still a baby here...
    • Luz accidentally consuming Maya's essence just like Emperor Belos in Chapter 55 definitely falls into this following the airing of "Hollow Mind", where it's revealed that it's palisman souls that Belos absorbs in order to curb his condition. It becomes even harder to stomach after "Thanks to Them", where a mortally wounded Flapjack willingly gives up his essence to save Hunter's life.
    • In Chapter 23, Luz waves off being stabbed with a knife. However, Chapter 69 shows that between getting impaled with a sword and nearly dissected in the school war, she's developed aichmophobia and getting a small cut is enough to make her panic.
    • A short-lived one occurs in Chapter 108 which came out a week and a half after Chapter 107. The moment that Lilith turns out to know that Clair, and by extension, Cross, are members of the extended Clawthorne family in the latter, the former chapter's reveal that Belos exterminated most of dragonkind and is their disgraced ancestor as well means things won't turn out good if he learns how they're connected to him.
    • Chapter 37: "The Forest of Fear" has Hunter nearly kill Lilith so he could capture Luz and use her as bait to finally capture Eda. Chapter 131: "Hollow Mind at Last" makes these actions even darker when Hunter discovers that Belos created him using Lilith's blood, which means he attempted to murder his own mother without even knowing it.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight:
    • "Recovering" has a scene in which Steve attempts to continue reporting to Lilith despite her betraying the Emperor's Coven. "Elsewhere and Elsewhen" shows that he does still support her.
    • "Any Sport in a Storm" has two examples.
      • Skara ended up developing a crush on Willow because she was blunt, honest and kind to her, which led to the former becoming a better person. In the episode, Willow ended up befriending Hunter the exact same way.
      • Darius shows he's capable of giving a few Pet the Dog moments to Hunter in the episode. In "A Surprising Visitor", Darius puts aside his rivalry with Alador in order to cure his older siblings, all of whom have been mutated into abominations.
    • The entire basis of the story is that no matter what, Luz sees Eda, King, Hooty and Lilith as her family. By the near end of Season 2, they've all come to accept her as such.
    • "Chapter 25: Good from the Bad" has Amity making the bold decision of pulling Luz into their First Kiss on the lips. "Clouds on the Horizon" has this very moment happen, and both take place at dusk at Blight Manor!
    • Every moment of bonding between Lilith and Hunter from the time she took him in up to Chapter 131 becomes far sweeter once the truth that they're mother and son is revealed.
  • I Knew It!: In response to "Blighted by the Light", a reviewer deduced that the "Wade" mentioned by Dipper was the same Wade from Kim Possible. Word of God confirmed it in the next chapter's responses.
    • The same reviewer, Shuffollower, predicted that the boyfriend Edric claimed to have was Hunter. "Grom: The Musical (Part 2)" reveals it's true, the previous chapter confirming it's a Secret Relationship.
    • Another reviewer correctly guessed that the man who revived Lilith is Baron Samedi of the Haitian Vodou.
    • Shuffollower later guessed it would be either Puck or Anu Bist who dies in the Book 1 finale. It ends up being Puck, while Anu Bist is injured.
    • Crash X Fusion theorized that Capt. James Hook would appear as a villain in Book 2. A day later, Chapter 43 was posted and Hook made his debut.
    • Crash also believed that the 2021 crossover with Amphibia would be included in Book 2. This came to pass in "Chapter 56: Going Through Changes".
    • Many reviewers were convinced that Amity became part Fae due to her deal with Puck on account of her Living Shadow and that Puck had given her some of his power. "Chapter 66: The Glandus War: What is it Good For?" officially confirms it.
    • Following the release of "For the HECK of It", some reviewers theorized that Terra is the one who killed Vina, which is later proven true in "The Last Stand".
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Unlike her canon counterpart, Luz is far more aggressive and mean-spirited at the start of the story, which even causes a falling out between her and Willow. This all stems from the Slayground Incident, when as a five-year-old Luz was attacked by a crowd when they saw she was human. After that, everything changed. Luz at least eased up over time and grew to become a better person. Luz's suffering doesn't decrease unfortunately, and she winds up developing a fear of sharp objects after being impaled and cut by Emily and Asi, not to mention she kills Trini by accident.
    • The same can't be said for Emily Tricks, who was accidentally cursed by Eda when she saw Luz being attacked and stepped in to defend her daughter. While she was suffering from her curse, Emily was abandoned by her parents, who she later learned were wild witches. This gave Emily a grudge against the Clawthornes and wild witches in general. Like Luz, she Took a Level in Jerkass because of the Slayground Incident but while Luz eventually learned to become a better person and a better friend, Emily doubled down on her Jerkass behavior by becoming the "Queen of Glandus", declaring war on Hexside, and keeping her girlfriend Stella trapped in a toxic and abusive relationship. As time goes on, more of Emily's tragic past is revealed, including the fact that she was taken in by a criminal organization run by Terra and her true father, Adrian Graye, had her parents killed so no one would learn of his connection to her believing that with her boiling pox, she'd die all alone. There's no doubt that Emily was the most scarred teen in the series until she turned 18 near the end of Book 2.
    • Boscha starts out as a bully just like her canon counterpart, enforcing Hexside's "the strong rules over the weak" creed, forcing Skara to end her friendship with Bo, and generally believing that she is above consequences until she destroys Luz and Amity's relationship out of revenge near the end of Book One. By the time she realizes that she went too far, it's too late since she becomes Hated by All and drives her friends away. What's worse is that she was provoked by Dolly and Nicole, the former stabbing her in the back when they get punished and the latter being fine with Boscha being kicked off the grudgby team if it means making Eda's kid suffer, putting her own pettiness over her daughter's happiness.
    • Odalia of all people is this. Despite trying to sabotage her daughter's friendship with Luz several times and being the one to put the idea of cursing Eda into Lilith's head, Odalia loves her family and is devastated when she ends up driving them away, leaving her alone in an empty mansion with nothing but alcohol to drown her sorrows in. While she does attempt to get better, Trini forces her to have an affair with Lilith, which results in her and Alador divorcing and her being stripped of both the Blight name and her reputation.
    • Nina Fangs grew up under threat of being killed just for being a lycan witch, should she ever give in to her primal instincts along with the rest of her family. Nina antagonizes several people, most notably Boscha, but she herself ends up getting betrayed and nearly killed by Emily during the school war and afterward, she has to live with Skara's family for a probation period or else she'll be killed.
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: There have been several Jerkass characters throughout the series, such as Nicole (who used her daughter to take revenge on Eda), Felicity (who used hers to spy on Luz and her friends while she herself tried to get info out Eda), Arthur & Destiny (guilty of abuse and mutating their own children along with publicly assaulting Alador), and Principal Faust (who remains The Dreaded Dean Bitterman). Then there's all the psychopaths like the Inner Demon, the Coachman, the Archangels, and Darlene all of whom would attack children without a second thought if they get one step closer to their goals. The jerks garner the hatred of the reviewers more, which is why the fans hoped one of them would be the unlucky soul Luz had to collect for Baron Samedi to save Lilith's. The writers were gravelly disappointed that no one thought even once that it was the Inner Demon's considering how old he is and how long he's done what he does.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Most readers take an interest in the series due to all the Disney shows and movies that become part of its continuity.
  • Karmic Overkill: While many had been glad when Emily was defeated at the end of the "Glandus War" arc and continued to suffer on a smaller scale afterward, her being sent to the Underworld by Mel was seen as having taken it too far after her backstory was revealed.
  • Les Yay: There's a massive amount of Ship Tease between 6 yuri couples and one male pairing that becomes an Official Couple along with the story's main pairing.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Many readers immediately predicted King's and Amity's deaths at the end of Chapter 141 would be undone since the deaths of the main protagonist's younger brother and girlfriend would put the story in a Too Bleak, Stopped Caring situation. Sure enough, both characters end up getting resurrected in the following chapter.
  • Love to Hate: Nicole is the OC embodiment of this, given how much Hate Sink she displays and how satisfying it always is to see her get hit by a ton of Laser-Guided Karma.
  • Moe: Kay Thians, Goonla's newborn daughter who Amity takes custody of when her father and brother Levi are imprisoned.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Belos crosses it over and over; he's had people who tried to protect Luz killed after promising her he wouldn't harm them if she didn't cause trouble, killing his brother William, and having Hunter try to kill Lilith, his blood mother, of whom he created him from while never telling him the truth, and all the while Belos has been working to free the Horned King using a Draining Spell that would deprive all branded witches with coven sigils of their magic before sending the entity to Earth in order to wipe out the human race.
    • Darlene is even worse here, having moved beyond just eating overconfident pick-up artists to people of all kinds, taking a particular liking to children.
    • Felicity Fox starts off as a muckraking reporter who stoop to any low to get the biggest scoops she can find and even forces her daughter Felicia to do the same. She's so determined to to do so, she makes a deal to keep the Draining Spell a secret on the condition that she gets to keep her magic, then goes out of her way to try and kill Felicia for overhearing her when she made the deal, effectively proving that Felicity doesn't care about anyone but herself.
  • Older Than They Think: This isn't the first Owl House fic where someone does one of the following surprising moments:
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: A great deal from reviewers and the authors:
    • Botholomule: Bo/Mattholomule
    • Tomscha: Tom/Boscha
    • Nidonna: Nina/Donna
    • Lambina: Lambi/Nina
    • Starvee: Star/Vee
    • Licross: Lindsay/Cross
    • Emilindsay: Emily/Lindsay
    • Mukyle: Muka/Kyle
    • Mabifica: Mabel/Pacifica
    • Candip (an alternate version of CandyDip): Candy/Dipper
    • Clasha: Clara/Masha
    • Cronna: Cross/Donna
    • Emilzee or Zemily: Emily/Zee
  • Shocking Moments:
    • Puck's death in "Chapter 40: The Rescue" hits hard, especially since it was revealed that Puck was Peter Pan.
    • Darius' death in "Chapter 59: The Ballad of Eda (Part 2). Darius is a major character so him getting killed drastically changes things, especially for Hunter.
    • The Reveal that Emily is an illusionist in "Chapter 64: The Glandus War: Turning Point". This means that everything Emily has ever done could've been faked to look impressive in order to build her up as a force to be reckoned with.
    • The Stinger of Chapter 84, which discloses the identity of Director Gates: Angel Sinclair, Back from the Dead and Joseph's widow. The next chapter goes on to show how she became a modern day Witch Hunter. The authors applauded themselves on successfully keeping this twist secret from their most analytical readers.
    • Chapter 125 ends with the death of Beel Zatar in a high stakes move to out Terra as the leader of the Tarot Guild. His gambit would pay off in forcing Terra to switch tactics and contribute in her final defeat.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • "Breaking Ties" strongly hinted at a showdown between Luz and Nina Fangs during the Glandus War, as the latter was very eager to fight the former. However, it never happened as Luz spent most of her time fighting Emily, then Maya and Meteora while Nina fought and lost to Skara, making Nina's vow an empty threat. This was subverted in "Chapter 74: Hexing Out for a Hero", with the two of them getting on each other's nerves enough to have a witch's duel.
    • Chapter 118: "See the Blight" gives Amity a huge win with her overcoming the trauma of her mugging and taking down Zepher and Brian in a fight with her family's help. However, the fact that she didn't fight and beat Bangles, who was brought in to take on Luz and lost two chapters prior, makes it feel incomplete despite Amity no longer being affected by the memory.
    • Chapter 143 has Maleficent and the Three Good Fairies working together to protect the Boiling Isles from being invaded by the Titan Mechs. Too bad the four of them are never shown interacting with each other.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • In terms of canon characters, the early debuts of Hunter, Raine Whispers and Vee was a surprise as they will change how the story progresses.
    • In the case of crossover characters, no one was expecting the characters of the Reunion Falls series to appear. The same goes for Tom Lucitor.
    • Absolutely no one expected Dr. Frakes and Terri to appear, especially since it wasn't long since they first appeared in their series.
    • Characters from Hazbin Hotel, Rick and Morty, The Electric Piper, and Helluva Boss also pop up, and they're not even Disney properties.
  • Unpopular Popular Character: Like his basis Chris McLean, Mephistopholes McScream build up a fanbase despite being hated by everyone he meets In-Universe. As a result, the authors decided to create more Total Drama expies for the story.
  • The Woobie:
    • Amity's qualified for this since the series's humble beginnings; from being jumped and attacked by the same two Glandus High students twice to taking on Emperor Belos himself in the Book 1 finale and suffering from his illusions to the pressure of having to care for a newborn hatchling, burdening herself with looking out for everyone, and learning she's having Power Incontinence due to becoming part Fae leads to her having double the stress she had in canon.
    • Lilith also plummets into this status by the end of Book 1 and just keeps falling deeper and deeper into it as the story progresses: having to make a deal with Baron Samedi to survive nearly being killed by Hunter, learning she killed Camila and living with her after the Baron resurrects her only to get kicked out of the Owl House once she learns the truth, being forced into an affair with Odalia and being outed for it and cursing Eda, which makes her far more hated than Eda had ever been, and being possessed by the Baron when she gives up and accepts not being deserving of love. If one doesn't feel sorry for her after all of that, they have no soul.
    • Tom and Ludo both barely escaped with their lives from whatever laid waste to Mewni, but they were the only members of their families to survive. In Ludo's case, it drove him mad and got him locked up in the conformatorium.
    • Angel Sinclair, Eda's human friend that she met in 1982, didn't have much of a good life on Earth. Her mother didn't listen to her, she was regularly subjected to bullying with her main tormentors being the Gates siblings, and she struggled with Borderline Personality Disorder. That's not even going into how she was murdered by Eda in her Owl Beast form...
      • There's also the reveal that Angel turns out to be Director Gates, having been brought back to life and turned into a magic-loathing Cyborg thanks to her own mother paying off Isaac Gates and the Blind Eye Society to revive her and erase her memories of Eda, making her a Tragic Villain.
    • Zee suffers big time during Book 2's final Story Arc. She finds herself being ostracized by her step-grandparents due to their issues with Clair marrying Damien and adopting her, she loses the only connection to her birth mother and most of her magic after facing a coven head in order to save her classmates from being branded, and she's taken the the emperor's castle and locked up in the dungeon.
    • Felicia Fox would initially pass for a Jerkass Woobie given how she remorselessly exposed Amity for disowning her family or helping with getting Odalia and Alador to divorce if it wasn't for the fact that she was being pressured by her mother. She offically becomes this when Felicity attempts to murder her when she learns that her birther is in on the truth behind the Day of Unity and is selling out witchkind so she can keep her own magic.
