YMMV / Lu & the Bally Bunch

Go To

  • Awesome Art: The animation can get extremely fluid at times, especially when it transitions to cel-shading.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Gus is commonly interpreted as autistic by neurodivergent viewers. Among other things, he hates loud noises, is more serious than the other bugs, can be overly blunt at times, enjoys building towers (a repetitive movement), and will sometimes isolate himself from the others, all common traits of autistic children. To add fuel to the fire, one of the show's consultants is RespectAbility.
  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: Do NOT call the show a "rip-off" of The Buzz on Maggie unless you want to be sprayed with RAID.
  • Fan Nickname: Before the show officially premiered, many unofficial names for the rest of the ensemble cast were used, including Bob for Gus and Troy for Biba.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • A few members of the fandom are also associated with the fandoms of the Babyfirst series ABC Galaxy and the Cbeebies show Tish Tash and create crossover art for the shows.
    • There are also some fans who are really into Toki Pona and/or Neocities. Other fans are into Bluey, Godzilland, and Work It Out Wombats!.
    • The conlang community seems to like the show a lot. The third Wikipedia language version to get a page on the show (after Bulgarian and Hungarian) was in the engineered "logical language" known as Lojban. But, to be fair, the Lu fandom originated on Scratch, which is also a major hub for younger conlangers.
  • I Am Not Shazam: Many people incorrectly refer to the show as Ladybird Lu. To be fair, that was the show's Working Title.
  • Periphery Demographic: The series was heavily hyped by fans (mostly preteen and teenage girls) on Deviantart and Scratch, with fanart being made up to years before the series actually debuted. This fandom only grew after the series debuted, with a fan wiki and Reddit page being created merely weeks after its premiere.
  • Trans Audience Interpretation: Some fans headcanon Etienne as non-binary due to his genderfluid look and the fact that some fans mistook him for a girl after his debut episode.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Before the show premiered, Biba was often mistaken for a male by fan artists due to her short hair and lack of eyelashes.
  • Viewer Species Confusion: Most of the bugs' species are easily identified; Lu's ladybird spots and Biba's large butterfly wings, for instance. Some leave very safe guesses; Gus' single pair of wings and his residence being near water easily implicate him being a fly, with the latter correlation being that they're used as fish bait. Declan's however, is rather tricky. His generic, albeit bulky design leaves little room for guessing. The best guess would be "dung beetle" if we go by alliterative naming conventions and considering his liking towards Toilet Humor and all things smelly (which puts Gus' species to be specifically "greenfly", another name for a common green bottle fly, which is somewhat far-fetched).
