YMMV / Loving Vincent

Go To

  • Award Snub: Was nominated for Best Animated Feature but lost to Coco (though that's not to say that Coco didn't deserve it).
  • Awesome Music: Clint Mansell's score, capped off with a beautiful cover of Don McLean's "Vincent (Starry Starry Night).
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Vincent helping a young girl draw a chicken is absolutely adorable.
    • After talking to several people in town, going in circles, getting into arguments (and fights) and realizing his own unfairness to Vincent, Armand finally comes to some level of understanding about Vincent's last days in Auvers. Realizing that he's honest, he bequeathes the letter to Dr. Gachet's care. Later, Armand and his father receive a reply from Johanna van Gogh, Theo's widow, who copies the letter out for them.
    • Armand's gradual investment in his search. He'd started out not caring in the slightest about why the crazy tenant who'd cut off his ear and embarrassed his family had shot himself, but by the end he's realized how foolish this was, largely by talking to those that had been on friendlier terms with Vincent.
Marguerite: You want to know so much about his death - but what do you know of his life?
Armand: I know that he... tried hard. To prove that he was good for something.
Marguerite: Yes. He did. That's why I take flowers to his grave. It's all I can do for him now. He would appreciate the delicate beauty of their blooms. Even each blade of their grassy stems. No detail of life was too small, or too humble for him. He appreciated and loved it all.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Vincent's death in general, but in particular Theo's depression after the fact; his wife tries to distract him with their infant child, but he only stares sadly at Vincent's paintings, with tears in his eyes and a Death by Despair not long after his brother.
    • The end credits reveal that Marguerite never married, and kept the portrait Vincent had made of her in her bedroom for the rest of her life. Whether this was out of guilt or if Vincent was The Lost Lenore for her is pure conjecture.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: Some of the characters look a little dead-eyed due to the super-realistic oil painted rotoscoping.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Oh hell yes. The movie was made with incredible attention to detail (The film's 65,000 frames were all oil paintings on canvas, created using the same techniques as Van Gogh by a team of 125 artists drawn from around the globe) and loving effort, and even casual art lovers will recognize many of Van Gogh's paintings in the film. The commitment to keeping the animation in Van Gogh's style is also obvious, with his characteristic thick brushstrokes so accurate that they almost make the film 3D at some points.
