YMMV / Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club

Go To

  • Actor Shipping: Between Aguri Onishi and Hinaki Yano, obviously owing to the relationship between their characters. Viewers and even their fellow idols won't waste any chance to tease them through the various streams, Twitter and interviews, with Agupon getting uppity when Hinaki's attention is directed towards a girl other than herself or Ayumu.
  • Adaptation Displacement: The anime drastically eclipses the original video game in terms of broad appeal, to the point where it's less common to hear of a Nijigasaki fan getting their start with ALL STARS than the anime.
  • Adorkable: Setsuna and Yu, big time. The moments where Yu gushes over idols are plentiful.
  • Americans Hate Tingle: Lanzhu's anime characterization has been less well-received by overseas fans who experienced the story of ALL STARS, who felt that the anime wasted an opportunity to redeem the game's failed "evil school idol" plotline and instead gave a watered-down version of Lanzhu.
  • Awesome Art:
    • The 3D sequences in the opening "Nijiiro Passions" are some of the most slick in Love Live. Complementing the clean models is the camera tracking that makes good use of the medium of 3D animation.
    • The "Setsuna Scarlet Storm" sequence in Episode 1 is definitely just the animation team showing off. Ditto for some of the most elaborate MVs like "Dream with You", "Butterfly" and "Solitude Rain".
    • The climax of episode 11 is nothing short of beautiful - the atmosphere, camera angles and fluid animation all mix together for one of the most shocking moments in the story of Love Live.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Some characters still remain controversial even after several changes to the storyline from ALL STARS.
    • Ayumu: A more down-to-earth, approachable and flawed character, which development is one of, if not the best, in the story of the Love Live franchise? Or too jealous, possessive and passive to be likeable? For that matter, the amount of focus she gets compared to other girls is likely to cause discussions between those that think she deserves to be the face of Nijigasaki, owing to her development and her status as the traditional Japanese idol that makes mistakes and grows with the audience, and those that would rather have a more bombastic character like Setsuna or Kasumi take the lead.
    • Yu: She is either one of the best additions to the storyline, providing the audience with a likeable viewpoint character that is cool, endearing and funny... or unnecessarily drags down the other characters by taking agency away from them, by being part of the club yet not actually doing anything that warrants her being their manager, and being one half of the yuri drama that took over the last third of season one of the anime. Arguments over whether Yu and the protagonist of ALL STARS should be treated as being the same character or not due to the many differences between them despite Yu being based off of the protagonist also exist between fans.
    • Shioriko: Some fans enjoy the Adaptational Nice Girl treatment she received in the anime for making her more likeable and removing what many thought was an unnecessary amount of drama in the games. Others have argued the writers went too far and also removed the interesting aspects of her character, turning her into a generic Nice Girl that doesn't do anything to stand out among the many idols in Nijigasaki, let alone in the franchise as a whole.
  • Broken Base:
    • Nijigasaki's radically different approach to a Love Live! anime caused a split among fans. While some fans praise the show for having more meaningful and complex character development episodes for its cast compared to previous seasons, subverting traditional drama twists, and having a bevy of unique and memorable insert songs, other fans find that the lack of a story or cause to unite the group felt like a wasted opportunity and makes it difficult to sympathize with the characters, with the overdose of Character Focus causing pacing issues and the songs being less memorable than previous seasons.
    • The drama bomb covered through episodes 10-12. The Japanese fandom rejoiced with what was easily the most intense yuri moment in the franchise, the fantastic direction and animation, and the popularity of Ayumu/Yu as a pairing exploded, with multiple fanart, doujin and merchandise featuring them being released on short term. However, some people criticized the sudden dramatic turn, likening the overtly sexual atmosphere and scenes to something more appropriate to yuri anime like Sakura Trick or Strawberry Panic. The viewer's position on Yu and Ayumu, both as a pairing and individuals, will likely be cemented on their acceptance of yuri in Love Live, and their preference between platonic and overtly romantic relationships.
  • Common Knowledge: Due to its status as a B-Team Sequel, some people have taken to call the project a "non-canon spin-off" or not in continuity with the Love Live! School Idol Project/Sunshine!! timeline. No higher-up has made any official statement about any of this.
  • Continuity Lock-Out:
    • Not in terms of the story itself, as it is designed to be accessible for newcomers to Nijigasaki, but the sheer amount of references and Mythology Gags to both the game and existing Nijigasaki material can cause the significance of many scenes to be lost on viewers who haven't been following the franchise.
    • The anime doesn't bother properly introducing Shizuku, Kanata, and Emma to either Yu and Ayumu or the viewers, apparently assuming that the viewer will already be familiar with them from their role as minor characters in Love Live! School idol festival.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: The focus on internal drama in Nijigasaki has led to fans concluding that the following characters have some sort of disorder.
    • Ayumu has been speculated by the fanbase to have attachment/abandonment issues, owing to her fear of being left behind, her difficulty in understanding the new bonds she and Yu were developing in season 1, and her emotional dependence on Yu before character development.
    • Rina is speculated to be autistic thanks to her difficulty in expressing her emotions, her lack of friends before meeting Ai and her largely introverted personality. Her inability to display emotion is also very similar to reduced affect display.
    • Kanata is seen as narcoleptic thanks to her Sleepyhead habits, despite the fact that the anime clarifies that she's perpetually tired only because she has to take care of Haruka and handle a half-time job while also attending school.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • The president of the Nijigasaki Drama Club is surprisingly popular despite being a minor character in the series, partly because she's voiced by Momoyo Koyama of Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight fame, partly because of her design, and partly because she's immediately shipped with Shizuku the moment they first appeared onscreen together.
    • Kyoko, Ayumu's fan who debuted in Episode 6, and made sporadic appearances until episode 12 gave her a more meaningful role, has gained popularity due to her appearance and voice resemblance to Honoka Kousaka, with many jokes done at how Honoka has apparently reincarnated twice into the Love Live franchiseNote, or using her goddess' powers to travel in time and space to help the new idol club.
    • The unnamed Vice President of Nana's student council has also become a big fan favorite for her dorky fangirling over Setsuna in Episode 11...while completely unaware that the school idol she idolizes the most happens to be the student council president she serves under. Her complete obliviousness to Setsuna's true identity despite the obvious hints has been a popular subject of comedic fanart revolving around her and Setsuna.
    • As mentioned below in One-Scene Wonder, the Nagashi Somen Club has garnered a lot of love from the fans despite appearing only a total of once thanks to their memorable introduction as well as the sheer outlandishness of such a club existing in the school, with many fans expressing a desire, either jokingly or otherwise, to see a spin-off featuring them as the main characters. The staff seems to have caught on to this, as the Nagashi Somen club's been given their own "merch" in the form of somen you can purchase at The Chara Cafe in Odaiba for April Fools' 2021 and in Season 2, the club takes the center stage of the 2nd School Idol Festival.
    • The glasses-wearing twins in Nana's student council, both with gray hair in braids, also caught the attention of many fans when they first appeared in Episode 3.
    • The Konoe sisters' mother is incredibly popular despite only appearing a handful of times during the anime's second season, having spawned numerous fanart just moments after her first debut!
    • An unnamed blonde member of Motion Pictures Studies Club has become popular among the long time fans largely because she was voiced by no other than Anna Mugiho, the voice actress behind every Love Live! animals throughout the series, who has finally given a role as a human character in the franchise history.
    • Despite only appearing in the Famitsu comics and as a plush in the anime, Ayumu's snake Sasuke is very popular with fans for its cute design. Many fans were disappointed that it was only a plush in the anime.
  • Epileptic Trees: Several little details throughout the anime (Love Live only being mentioned once, very little mention of other school idol groups besides Nijigasaki, Shinonome, and Touou, and Yu's room not having any posters in it) have lead some viewers to believe that Nijigasaki may exist outside of traditional anime canon, exists in a timeline without µ's or Aqours in it, or is possibly a Stealth Prequel - despite the existence of modern smartphones and the mention of Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Ayumu gets called "Pomu", an Alternate Character Reading of her first name.
    • Emma earns the nickname "Emmama" due to her motherly vibe.
    • Setsuna is sometimes referred to as "Setsunana", a Portmanteau of her real name, Nana, and her Stage Name.
    • Setsuna has also earned the nickname "Gundam" due to being the namesake of Setsuna F. Seiei, whose catchphrase is "I am Gundam".
    • Voice actresses:
      • Aguri Onishi (Agupon)
      • Mayu Sagara (Mayuchi/Mayu)
      • Kaori Maeda (Kaorin)
      • Natsumi Murakami (Nacchan/Natchy)
      • Chiemi Tanaka (Chemii/Tanaka)
      • Akari Kitou (Akarin)
      • Maria Sashide (Chunrun)
      • Miyu Kubota (Miyutan/Miyu)
      • Tomori Kusunoki (Tomoriru/Riru)
      • Moeka Koizumi (Moepi/Pippi)
      • Shuu Uchida (Shu-chan/Shushu)
      • Akina Homoto (Homin/Minmin)
      • Hinaki Yano (Hinanon)
    • The series is also referred as Love Live Nijigaku for some fans due to its long and cumbersome title. In Japan, it's alternatively known as "Anigasaki" to differentiate the name of the anime from the group itself.
  • Fanon:
    • It's somewhat common to find fans thinking Rina is a 14-year old, despite nothing in the games or anime ever stating something in that regard, likely due to her short stature and status as a canonical Teen Genius, making many assume that she's a Grade Skipper like Mia actually is.
    • Yu doesn't actually hold an official position in the School Idol Club (entirely calling herself a "supporter"), but fans will either call her the club composer (despite the club composing songs entirely on their own, as seen in Season 1 Episode 13) or "leader" (which Kasumi actually is). This stems from her game counterpart holding both of those positions in the game and assuming Yu will be the same.
    • It is commonly depicted in some fanarts that Kasumi is always envy of Emma's large breasts as commonly found in the Love Live! franchise due to her mischievous personality towards everything, whereas in the source materials she's only jealous of her being more cuter or smarter than her.
  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: Telling any Nijigasaki fan that their group is only a non-canon spin-off and that the true third generation of Love Live is Liella!. You will likely get lectured over Nijigasaki history, how, YES, they started out as a game-only project, but became far bigger through the support of their fans, and the fact that the Love Live franchise doesn't do generations or actually graduates their groups.
  • Fountain of Memes: Between the voice actresses, it is Agupon's and Kaori's reaction faces that tend to attract the most attention in Love Live meme communities, depicting Agupon as somewhat of a "yandere" towards Hinaki Yano, and Kaorin as a massive troll.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With fans of the Chainsaw Man manga, entirely owing to the fact that Tomori Kusunoki voices one of the protagonists, Makima, and in English dub she was voiced by Ayumu's VA Suzie Yeung. Dozens of crossover fanart depicting Setsuna as Makima were posted in social media after the reveal, with many Nijigasaki fans expressing newfound interest on the series at the same time.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In Episode 3, Kasumi complains about Setsuna's passion over cuteness, and in Episode 8 Rina covers Shizuku's face with a unique board that has a Shizuku face drawn in brown marker ink, hence a Shizu-chan Board. Come the Nijigasaki Shuffle Festival, Kasumi and Shizuku's actresses perform Setsuna's solo "CHASE!" and Rina's solo "Doki Pipo Emotion" respectively, with the latter using her own Shizu-chan Board.
    • Yu's explicit stance on not being a school idol and deciding to stay in the background to support her clubmates becomes this after her voice actor, Hinaki Yano, is cast as Suzune Miyama, the main protagonist of Selection Project, another series in the Idol Genre. In that series, Suzune is the center of 9-tie, its protagonist idol unit, and her dreams of being an idol is a driving force behind her motivations, in stark contrast to Yu.
    • Shizuku directed the opening PV for the 2nd School Idol Festival. Her English voice actress, Jill Harris, would direct the English dub of Love Live! Superstar!!.
    • Kasumi's song in the Just Believe album is called "Margaret". Come the release of Superstar season 2, and Liella's new rival is called Wien Margaret(e), which along with her similarities in personality to the R3BIRTH trio makes for a funny coincidence/callback.
    • The "SIF 2" shirts worn by Nijigasaki students for the second festival. Come in few months, the sequel to Love Live! School idol festival was announced as Love Live! School idol festival 2 MIRACLE LIVE! or SIF 2 in short.
  • I Am Not Shazam: Some people still use the name PDP (Perfect Dream Project) to refer to the Nijigasaki High School Idol Club. Perfect Dream Project was the name of the project as originally teased - only to get the name it currently has some months later.
  • I Knew It!: Some fans predicted that Season 2 would bring in subunit-focused plotlines, partially because all of the characters already had solo Character Focus episodes in the first season, and to emulate ALL STARS bringing subunits into canon. Sure enough, Season 2 Episode 2 ends with Emma and Kasumi bringing together Kanata and Rina to perform together, kicking off the QU4RTZ plotline.
  • Incest Yay Shipping: Haruka and Kanata. This isn't helped by how the anime ignored EmmaKana, a very popular pairing in the games, in favor of EmmaKarin, leaving Kanata alone, and by Kanata's focus episode being dedicated to explore her relationship with Haruka. Add the lyrics and MV of "Butterfly" and you end up with a popular and accidental pairing. However, as with most incest pairings in the western fanbase of the franchise, this lands in No Yay territory.
  • It Was His Sled: Setsuna Yuki is actually Nana Nakagawa. No official material has made any secret out of this, so good luck not knowing it when first watching the anime.
  • Just Here for Godzilla:
    • Some fans watched the anime for the small chance that Shioriko Mifune would appear... but then she didn't. The announcement of Season 2 rekindled hopes that she may be introduced in an altered capacity. The same could be said for fans of Mia and Lanzhu. It was finally confirmed all three of them will appear in Season 2.
    • Some fans watch this series for Yu , the endearing interactions she has with the other members and her own continued growth as a composer/song writer for the school idols she cherish. Not bad for someone whose role in the series isn't meant to be in the spotlight.
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships: As a carryover from being the Player Character's representative in the anime, Yu is shipped with all of her school idol friends in Nijigasaki to varying degrees. Like Riko before her, Yu is jokingly referred to as a "harem protagonist" because of it. She's even shipped with her own game counterpart.
  • Les Yay: A staple of the franchise. Covered here.
  • Memetic Badass:
    • Jokes about how Ayumu can, and will murder everyone that gets near her precious Yu, no matter which idol franchise they come from, abound. This isn't helped by her extremely crazy portrayal in the infamous Famitsu Yonkoma, where she can beat martians and demons alike through her idol skills, and also is the owner of a pet snake called Sasuke.
    • As noted in Launcher of a Thousand Ships above, Yu is portrayed as a female casanova who can and will easily charm any girl, especially if you're a school idol, and include her in her ever expanding all-female harem. Japanese fans even call her "Ikemen Yu" for the "handsome" way she charms a lot of the girls she interacts with in the anime.
  • Memetic Loser: Karin. Her tendency of easily getting herself lost no matter what as well as her other dorkier habits tend to overshadow her more mature persona in the fandom's perspective. From how the fans, especially the Japanese ones, tend to talk about her, you'd think she's a completely helpless girl who cries for Emma all the time and needs her help for even the smallest of things, especially when it comes to directions.
  • Memetic Mutation: Can be found here under the "Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club" folder.
  • Memetic Psychopath:
    • By the way the fanbase talks about Ayumu, you would think she's seconds away from stabbing anyone that dares to touch her precious Yu. Her voice actress, Aguri Onishi, is also seen as a yandere by fans given how she acts around Yu's voice actress, Hinaki Yano, as well as how jealous she can be towards other girls in namas and livestreams.
    • After her appearance in the anime, Haruka, of all people, seems to have gotten this treatment as well. Fans play up her protectiveness over her sister Kanata to extreme levels to the point that she gets depicted as aggressively intimidating towards anyone who dares touch her precious older sister at best and murderously protective and/or possessive of her at worst in fan works.
  • Moe: Yu Takasaki. Despite her deadpan face on her initial introduction, she fairly acts more childish and cuter than everybody around in the anime.
  • One-Scene Wonder:
    • The Nagashi Somen Club that Yu and Ayumu stumbled upon in the first episode while looking for the school idol club room made quite an impression among fans. They later made a reappearance as one of the Clubs presenting at the open campus fair in Season 2 Episode 1.
    • The Wandervogel Club that took the former School Idol Club's room also got some minor popularity.
    • The costume club student who heavily resembles Dia in Episode 11 caught the eye of many viewers. Even Hinaki and Aguri, Yu and Ayumu's voice actresses, took notice of her too in one of their livestreams!
  • Pandering to the Base:
    • Yu Takasaki is seen by some as a love letter to those who want a Japanese multimedia franchise (centering on girls) to have a canon female "self-insert" character, something that is very rare to happen. Whereas other franchises are either in favor of a male one or prefer him instead of the canon female. And while Love Live is not the first, it is arguably the only successful non-otome franchise to have done this so far.
    • The anime is seen as a love letter to the already-existing fanbase of Nijigasaki, with multiple Mythology Gags, references and allusions to events that would only be all recognizable to someone already familiar with Nijigasaki from its early 2017 days. "Yume ga Koko Kara Hajimaru yo" in Season 1, Episode 13 of the anime is seen as the culmination of this, as the intro directly breaks the fourth wall to adress the fans that have stayed with Nijigasaki through thick and thin, thanking them for their loving support.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: As is tradition with Love Live. The most popular anime pairings are a portmanteau of the girls names.
    • Ayumu x Yu = YuPomu/YuuPomu/AYuumu
    • Rina x Ai = AiRina
    • Karin x Emma = EmmaKari/KariEmma
    • Kasumi x Shizuku = ShizuKasu
    • Setsuna x Yu = SetsuYu/SetsuYuu
    • Setsuna x Karin = SetsuKarin
    • Kanata x Shizuku = KanaShizu/ShizuKana
    • Lanzhu x Shioriko = LanShio/ShioLan
    • Mia x Rina = MiaRina/RinaMia
    • Ayumu x Shioriko = ShioPomu
    • Mia x Yu = MiaYu/YuMia
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: For those who don't like Lanzhu's characterization back in ALL-STARS, she's a lot nicer and now depicted as a Rival character this time around. It also helps that her character flaws are handled much better here and humanize her even more.
  • Self-Fanservice:
    • Thanks to the memetic attention on her behind, Shizuku will almost always be portrayed as having a large and curvy butt in fanart.
    • Similar to Hanamaru, Setsuna is often drawn with huge knockers due to her small height and medium bust size.
  • Signature Scene:
    • Setsuna's performance of "CHASE!" that inspired both Yu and Ayumu and introduced them to the world of school idols in the first episode. Ayumu's performance of "Dream With You" and her subsequent confession to Yu and the promise they make with each other afterwards at the end of the same episode counts too.
    • The Episode 10 moment where Setsuna accidentally tripped herself then clings on Yu, and Ayumu just witnessed the scene upon spotting them from afar.
    • The ending of Episode 11 where Ayumu pins Yu to her bed while confessing that she wanted to be a school idol just for her, complete with her legs locking Yu's in place. The final shot where Ayumu's phone is on top of Yu's reflecting their positions also deserves a special mention.
    • The School Idol Club's performance of "Yume ga Koko kara Hajimaru Yo" in the final episode of the first season.
    • The whole performance of "TOKIMEKI Runners" in the eigth episode of the 2nd Season.
    • The recall of Mirai Harmony in the eleventh episode of the 2nd Season.
    • The final performance of Nijigasaki High School Idol Club's "Future Parade" in the last episode of the 2nd Season.
  • Ships That Pass in the Night: Despite sharing almost no on-screen interactions in the anime, Kanata x Shizuku somehow became one of the most popular "minor" ships in Nijigasaki, constantly getting new fanart and fanfiction, probably owing to their shared status as "Normal" idols in the original School Idol Festival.
  • Tainted by the Preview: Complaints about the movie artstyle arose after the release of the first movie preview ranging from the Off-Model stills (most cite the faces looking weird), the even more simplified artstyle compared to the anime, and even why it has to change in the first place since the movie is supposed to be the start of the anime's conclusion.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • Some fans liked the approach taken with Ayumu's Insert Song, "Dream with You", in the anime's first episode, where she sang the first few lines a cappella, with the music then slowly being introduced with the vocals. As the episode dealt with Ayumu choosing to become a school idol despite her insecurities, they felt this direction was an excellent way to exemplify this. As such, they were disappointed when the full version of the song was released, which contained a heavy music accompaniment that was added to those lines. They felt that this diluted the meaning they derived from the song, while also finding it distracting, with some vocals being hard to discern over the music. As a result, they considered making their own edits of the song using the audio of the first few lines taken from the anime, combined with the rest of the full version.
    • While the anime's artstyle for the characters typically gets mixed reception from fans who are used to the standard Love Live! designs, Shioriko's design in particular tends to get the worst of it. Most complaints are aimed at her hair color, which is a much darker shade of jade green than usualnote , as well as her face bearing almost no resemblance to her game design.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: While Nijigasaki makes a genuine attempt to fix the problems of previous entries in the franchise and the mobile game it is based on by giving every single one of the protagonists a Character Focus episode, a couple characters are still pushed to the side in Season 1, with Season 2 providing much needed focus on previously-neglected characters and overall, doing a better job at developing the girls in the club.
    • While Emma has a number of interesting traits that could be expanded on, such as her growing up as a European who wanted to be a Japanese idol and the struggles she overcame to become an exchange student in the first place, all she does in the episode that focuses on her and Karin is get called cute a lot and try to persuade Karin to join the School Idol Club. Contrasting her lack of development with Karin's internal conflict in the same episode makes Emma come off as a Satellite Character. This was eventually solved when Emma and the rest of Nijigasaki members were equally given a proper story of their own in the 2nd Season.
    • Another side effect of this format is that the idols from the other schools - namely the ones from Shinonome and Touou academies - never get a chance to be developed. Even Haruka and Himeno, who have the most screentime, end up as Satellite Characters to Kanata and Karin.
    • Jennifer and Rakshata made a strong introduction at the beginning of Season 2, however they never had any contributions to the story apart from preparation for the joint 2nd School Idol Festival and their story arc ended after the main event. The same can be said with the Kurobane sisters who also end up like the aforementioned students.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • Kasumi and Setsuna's reconciliation after the idol club reformation is quickly swept aside, while they could have likely served to contrast different idol approaches and why the club is not a full unit, but rather "friends yet rivals". Instead, Kasumi spends most of the anime as a comic relief.
    • While the quick gathering of the idol club is done in order to avoid copying School Idol Project and Sunshine plot beats, this leaves Emma, Kanata and Shizuku woefully left behind as, to this day, we don't know their reasons to be school idols, how they were impacted by the conflict between Setsuna and Kasumi, and their own views upon what being a school idol meant.
    • Even though the girls being rivals to each other is supposed to be one of the main points in them being solo idols instead of a group, the only time the show gives them a reason to be in conflict with each other is during Karin's Character Focus episode. But because it happens during a Character Focus episode, the focus is given exclusively to Karin. While her feelings on the matter are explored through the episode, the other girls are only given a unified opinion, which is ironic given that "Individuality" is a major theme of the show.
    • The School Idol Festival is an ambitious project that could lead to all sorts of developments and conflicts as the girls work to make it happen, but the anime never uses it this way. Most of what we see of the preparations are the girls talking with other people to set it up and being offered help by the other students. Everything that happens afterwards is glossed over in favor of focusing on Ayumu's breakdown and reconciliation with Yuu. The final result is that the School Idol Festival ends up feeling like an afterthought. This is repeated in the 2nd Season, where the main plotlines are the formation of the sub-units and the development of the three newcomers, with the Festival being demoted to C-plot. The one conflict related to it in this season is solved within the same episode it's introduced, and once again all it takes is getting everyone to sit down and discuss.
    • The formation of R3BIRTH subunit was never given a proper story on its own and how Lanzhu, Mia and Shioriko formed their bond unlike the three main subunits.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The fantastic visual direction of the anime - particularly in episodes 6, 7 and 10 - helped win over a lot of naysayers. Then there is the climax of episode 11. The deranged atmosphere and animation, plus the visual direction of the episode, played a big role in creating what some have called the most dramatic and intense moment in the franchise.
  • Woolseyism: The subtitles spell "Ayu-pyon" as "Ayu-bun" in keeping with a bunny-hopping theme.
