- Fight Scene Failure: Many fight scenes are very unconvincing. When his enemies kill Yuan Ling's soldiers in episode seven, their swords are clearly nowhere near the soldiers' throats. The complete lack of fake blood makes it even more obvious.
- Les Yay: Ping Ting gets very close to Qing Chen, and even smells her hair while commenting on how alluring her perfume is.
- Narm: Yuan Ling's headgear is frequently almost as tall as his head. Apart from how strange it looks, it tends to sway when he moves his head. It's very distracting in serious scenes.
- Retroactive Recognition: Gong Jun plays Yuan Che. Four years later he became famous for playing Wen Kexing in Word of Honor.
- Visual Effects of Awesome: The scenery in the Meandering Skies is incredibly beautiful.
- The Woobie: Yuan Ji. For years he's ignored or looked down on because of his mother's low birth. Of all his siblings he's closest to Yuan Ming. When he discovers Yuan Ming's treachery, Yuan Ji pretends he's the real traitor and takes Yuan Ming "hostage" then commits suicide in an attempt to deflect attention from Yuan Ming.
- WTH, Costuming Department?: Some of the costumes are very strange. Especially these bizarre headdresses
