YMMV / Looking Up at the Half-Moon

  • Adaptation Displacement: If a western fan knows about the series at all, they'll be more apt to bring up the anime than the light novels it was based on. This is due in no small part to the source material having never been translated into English.
  • Critical Dissonance: ANN critics derided the anime as ugly, manipulative garbage, but MyAnimeList and ANN viewer ratings are generally positive. While few will argue that the animation is of great (or even good) quality, many liked the exploration of mortality and/or Yuichi and Rika's budding relationship.
  • Narm: After succeeding in setting up Yuichi to be caught by Rika looking at a porn magazine, Natsume does an Evil Laugh. The tone of the scene suggests that it wants you to take this event seriously, but such a moment is just completely inappropriate for this sort of show.
