YMMV / London After Midnight

Go To

  • Hype Backlash: London After Midnight is one of the most coveted lost horror and/or mystery films in existence, but people who've actually looked into the film are 50/50 on if it deserves its reputation. Due to various cuts and changes, the story is a mess, and while there are clarifying scenes known to have been shot that didn't make it into the final product, it's unknown if they'd be enough to fix the experience if they too could be retrieved. There's also little about the film that's particularly unique or historically significant (the fascination with London After Midnight didn't begin until after it was lost) and there are many lost horror films and lost scenes that, in light of the good documentation that exists around London After Midnight, would be more valuable a find.
  • Signature Scene: Although only stills remain, some have come to define the film.
    • The big draw of London After Midnight is the Man in the Beaver Hat. Close-ups of him as well as the scene in which he attacks Smithson and spreads his wings are the stills even people with a passing interest know the film by.
    • A signature scene by proxy is the vampires' get-together while the Bat Girl flies overhead. Only one still remains and by that time the Bat Girl has already landed. The scene was remade for Mark of the Vampire and is a signature scene to that film, so the same scene in London After Midnight draws attention for the intrigue of how it holds up against the remake.
