• Badass Decay:
  • In Men of the Moss Hags, Kate was a brave, snarky young woman who sneaked off to illegal conventicles against her father's will and once pushed a government agent off a bridge. There's little sign of that side of her character here.
  • Maisie, who was an outright Action Girl in the first novel, but in fairness she doesn't really get the opportunity here due to being Demoted to Extra.
• Ho Yay: Jack and Wat. When Jack remarks sadly that he has no love to steal or die for, Wat pats him on the shoulder and says "You do it for love of me." Jack agrees, and wonders what about Wat inspires "both lassies and greybeards" to such devotion.
• One-Scene Wonder: Mehitabel is a striking character: a hyper-talkative young tomboy who cheerfully helps the heroes mostly because she's bored with not being allowed to accompany her smuggler father on his adventures.
